Marcel's artwork will be shared in late August - Early September, followed by David's artwork somewhere in the fall.

Since our Bilderberg office is being BOMBARDED with questions by people who want to know more about this year's "zine" project for the Bilderberg Konferenz, here's a quick explanation.

"Hanswursts Hochzeit" is an unfinished drama written by the young J.W.Goethe around 1775 and consists mostly of a prologue, some fragmentary scene ideas and a loooooooong list of funny rude character names, like "Hans Arsch von Rippach" for example, or "Schwager Mistbeet, or "Tante Ursel mit dem kalten Loch". The initial idea for this project was to take these names and pair them with the type of grotesque portraits that Basil Wolverton so excelled in. It was initially just intended to be a little side project, a quick zine with a series of ugly faces, but when we invited other artists to participate, it just grew and grew, and at some point we realized that we would actually end up drawing all 133 of Goethe's characters. So we decided that we should also adapt the prologue, just to give the portraits more context, and then of course the next step was to to actually use the entire text, even the odds and ends, the half-finished verses and vague story ideas.

So now it's done, and the final result is truly weird little gem indeed. Like "Tintina", last year's collaborative Bilderberg project, this one is far more than the sum of it's parts, and I think connoisseurs of the unusual will surely get a kick out of it.

Marcel Ruijters voelt voor mij nog altijd als een groot Nederlands talent, dat er nochtans nog niet in geslaagd is om door te dringen tot een breed publiek. Daarvoor is zijn werk misschien ook te eigengereid. Nochtans kreeg hij vorig jaar de Stripschapprijs voor zijn hele oeuvre en mocht hij in commissie een verhaal maken over Jheronimus Bosch. En fan als ik ben, vroeg ik me onwillekeurig af of hij in staat zou zijn om een toegankelijk verhaal te maken zonder zijn eigenwijsheid te verliezen. Eerlijk gezegd gaat hem dat verrassend goed af.

Van Jheronimus Bosch is maar weinig bekend, dus er was alle ruimte om zelf een personage neer te zetten. Dat doet Ruijters overtuigend. Bosch (of eigenlijk Jeroen van Aken) voelt levensecht. Ook het Den Bosch waarin hij vertoeft overtuigt. Uit zijn berichten op facebook blijkt telkens weer hoeveel fascinatie Ruijters heeft voor kleine details, die verraden hoe het dagelijkse leven er in die tijd uitzag. Details, die ook in Jheronimus overal zijn terug te vinden. Mijn favoriet zijn misschien wel de houten sandalen, waarmee men de schoenen schoon weet te houden in de modderige straten van Den Bosch. Fascinerend genoeg, gaat de strip daardoor niet alleen over Bosch en de verwikkelingen om zijn persoon, maar ook over het dagelijkse leven in de middeleeuwen. Daarmee weet het iets toe te voegen aan het historische genre, dat maar al te vaak blijft steken in verkapte detectiveverhalen. Jheronimus doet verlangen naar meer van dit soort ontdekkingstochten.
