Märchen Mädchen or “Fairy Tale Girls” would’ve been a fun little past time for magical girl lovers out there however fate had different ideas. 

The show originally aired in the Winter season of 2018 but there’s a reason I’m only writing this review now. Even when I intially started watching I noticed that the OP wasn’t actually finished until a few episodes into the series which was already a red flag. As the anime went on, the animation and art started to drastically deteriorate. MM’s original run ended on 10 episodes as the studio was unable to finish the rest on time. The final 2 episodes were included on the Blueray’s which got released not long ago. So here we are. Obviously my memory is a bit lacking considering how long ago I watched this one but I’ll do my best.

Our main character is Kagimura Hazuki, a girl who lives with her step-mom and step-sister after her father remarried. She doesn’t have any friends and spends all her time reading books. One day, she runs into a mysterious person, follows them, stumbles into a library, goes through a portal and she finds herself in Kuzunoha Girl's Magic Academy.

This is where the magical girl aspect comes into play. The students at this school are “Mädchen”, girls who’ve been chosen by Origin stories aka the original texts of various fairy tales. Using these books, the girls can transform and gain the powers of the character whose Origin story they were chosen by. Some of these will be familiar to western audiences, like Cinderella (our main character), Puss in Boots or The Little Match Girl while others are from Japanese folklore like Princess Kaguya or Issun-bōshi.

This set up is pretty good! While I’ve heard of MG anime that are inspired by fairy tales, it was never to this extent. But moving on.

Hazuki needs to train to be able to use Cinderella’s story to transform but I honestly don’t remember much from that. The main point of the anime is the Hexennacht (sidenote: sounds familiar? lmao). The Hexennacht is a tournament between various magic schools around the world to find the strongest team, who can have one wish granted for them. With the introduction of the other teams from the foreign schools, their powers and the battles of the Hexennacht, we have the meat of the anime.

For an avid magical girl fan, this was an intriguing enough set-up but the anime makes it really difficult to enjoy. Besides the problems I listed in the beginning, the amount of characters and plots is just waaaaay too much for 12 episodes. The magical girl designs are also quite questionable. Some of them took the source material too literally, some were just plain lazy-looking and with how many girls there were, the screen was often cluttered and just painful to look at.

On a sidenote, the anime features some fanservice which is just unpleasant as the main characters are all underage but the only time it really gets showed into your face is the ED.

To wrap up, my score is really biased. Despite its many, MANY faults, I found something charming about this series and had at least some minimal fun watching it. However, the only people that would find enjoyment in this are magical girl fans. To anyone else, this anime will feel like a fucking car crash.[6/10] (x) (x)
