Setting: Post-Endgame MCU / Thunderbolts timeline
Summary : A former Red Room assassin and Bucky Barnes are forced to work together in the Thunderbolts. Haunted by their pasts and afraid to hurt again, they slowly go from enemies to something more, finding healing, trust, and a quiet kind of love in each other.
Bucky Barnes had known killers.
He knew the signs, the deliberate stillness, the predator’s silence, the eyes that never blinked when they should. That was the first thing he noticed about her.
Y/N was sharp angles wrapped in silence. Another Red Room ghost. Another trained weapon with a code name, not a childhood. She moved through the Thunderbolts’ compound like smoke, quiet, watchful, untouchable. Always in black. Never smiling.
He didn’t trust her.
Didn’t trust how she flinched at sudden noises, or the way she tensed when someone reached for a weapon too fast, even if it was just to clean it.
Didn’t trust how she’d disappear at night, reappear before dawn, and leave the gym floor dusted in sweat and guilt.
He’d been her once. He didn’t like seeing it again.
But then she saved his life.
In Budapest. A mission gone to hell. A compromised informant. Bucky, cornered and bleeding, his prosthetic damaged, heart pounding in that cold, mechanical rhythm he hated.
She came out of nowhere, knives flashing silver in the dark, breath calm, movements merciless.
And then, when it was over, when the enemy was down and he was still breathing, she crouched beside him, touched his face with shaking fingers, and said, “You were late.”
He laughed. Bleeding and broken, he laughed.
And something changed.

“I’m not like Yelena,” Y/N said one night. Just the two of them, sitting on the roof of the compound, legs dangling off the edge. City lights below like distant stars.
Bucky looked at her. At the faint scar above her brow. At the way she held her body, like it wasn’t hers, like she was still asking permission to inhabit it.
“You’re not her,” he said. “You’re you. That’s enough.”
She looked at him then, blue eyes sharp and wide, like she wasn’t sure if she wanted to hit him or kiss him.
“Don’t say things you don’t mean,” she said.
“I don’t,” he replied.
Silence fell, heavy and cold. Then:
“I see them when I sleep,” she murmured. “The people I hurt. The little girl I used to be. She looks at me like I ruined her.”
Bucky turned his gaze back to the sky.
“Yeah,” he said. “I see him too. The Soldier. He smiles when I scream.”
They didn’t speak after that. They didn’t need to.

Their kiss happened after a firefight in Estonia. Snow on their shoulders. Blood on her hands. Bucky’s jaw split open, dripping crimson. They’d almost lost each other, again.
Y/N pushed him against the wall of the safe house, breath ragged, trembling.
“I can’t keep doing this,” she whispered. “I can’t care. I break everything I care about.”
He cupped her jaw with his gloved hand, gently, like she might vanish.
“You won’t break me,” he said.
“I might.”
“You won’t.”
And then, slowly, carefully, he leaned in and kissed her. Not like a soldier, not like a weapon. Like a man who remembered softness. Like a man who wanted to give it back to her.
She kissed him like it was the first and last time.
And maybe, in a way, it was.

Yelena noticed first.
She found Y/N one morning staring out the window, coffee untouched.
“You love him,” Yelena said.
Y/N didn’t look away. “I don’t know if I can.”
“You don’t have to be perfect,” Yelena said, voice soft. “Just be real.”
Y/N laughed once—hollow. “I’ve never been anything else.”

The next time they kissed, it wasn’t after blood. It wasn’t after death.
It was after a quiet night in Bucky’s room, both of them reading, half-asleep, knees touching.
“I’m still scared,” she whispered. “Of what I might become again.”
He reached over and took her hand.
“We can be scared together.”
He kissed her temple.
“And we’ll choose. Every day. To be better.”
Her fingers curled into his.
And for the first time in years, she believed it.

They never talked about happy endings. They didn’t think they deserved them.
But on some mornings, Bucky would wake with her tangled in his arms, soft breaths against his neck, no nightmares behind her eyes.
And Y/N once just a weapon, now something more, would lie beside him, heart slow, shadows still present but no longer choking her.
They weren’t perfect.
But they had each other.
And maybe, just maybe, that was enough….
