First Thoughts: Outlander Episode 3x09 “The Doldrums”

I was found early, to have skill in composition–

A Touch of Mystery and Moonlight. Matthew B. Roberts and Toni Graphia said this episode was about not only how the Artimis is stuck in the “doldrums” but also how the characters aren’t “moving forward” with their relationships. That is definitely true for much of the episode, but there is also something else about this episosde that speaks to mysteries beyond human understanding.

The belief in superstitions pervade the story as does the magic of moonlight, which draws Claire and Jamie closer together. There is also the magic of Yi Tien Cho (Mr. Willoughby), whose words mesmerized the crew long enough to keep Hayes alive until the wind caught up with the ship.

So given all of that, here are my thoughts about episode 3x09:

The drumming at the beginning and the end of the show lets us know we’re not in Lallybroch anymore. Verra effective.

Yes, there were lots of superstitions on the ship. Everyone had to touch the horseshoe or disaster would follow. Men with red hair were considered to be bad luck; others must address them first to avert any ill luck they might bring. But what struck me the most was the bad luck associated with women! At least Claire and Marsali didn’t have to bear their breasts to calm the seas, because the figurehead was doing it for them! (Only men would come up with this particular superstition!)

Still, I liked the Captain’s explanation for why he did not discourage the superstitions, even though they are a double edged sword: “I would rather them make their luck than give up hope.”

I loved the entire segment with Yi Tien Cho (Mr. Willoughby) when he told his sad story to the crew to keep them distracted until the wind caught up with the ship. That was a very difficult monologue to deliver well and Gary Young did a great job with it

Yi Tien Cho said that “a story told is a life lived.”  But he refused to tell his story to Claire because “Once I tell it, I have to let it go.” So was he letting go of his past in order to save Hayes? If so, it was a noble sacrifice.

The way that Yi Tien Cho wrote on the deck with water was truly poetic and was reminiscent of Tai Chi in the precise but flowing movements of his hand and the stance of his legs. When he was writing (and speaking) he seemed to be truly a “fung-wong–a bird of fire.”

There was something poignant the first time we encounter Yi Tien Cho writing because when the poem evaporated it left only the bare deck behind. It reminded me of when Buddhist monks spend hours making elaborate sand mandalas and then sweep them away to remind us of the impermanence of everything.

And yet at another point in the story, when the rain comes and joins with the poem that Yi Tien Cho wrote, there is a different sense of the poem. It is almost as if the “bird of fire” that is Yi Tien Cho somehow brought the rain as he let water “dance like cranes” in his imagination. Furthermore, the words Yi Tien Cho spoke literally saved Haye’s life and so it is fitting that the words he wrote joined with the essence of the rain water and disappeared into that life giving force.

I can’t believe I’ve been mispronouncing Marsali’s name for years now! I was pronouncing it like Marsala wine (with an “i’ at the end instead of an ”a”). Well, at least I was closer to the real pronunciation with Marsali than I was with Laoghaire! Oy!

Thank goodness they made Marsali 18 in the show! She was 15 in the book–and Fergus was 31! Eighteen to thirty-one isn’t that much better but at least she is an adult! 

Like father, like son. Fergus also knew his true love the first time he saw her–and he is just as much a “coward” as Jamie was with telling Claire his secrets. Fergus has had a long list of lady loves that he has hidden from Marsali. Fortunately, she handles the news well (and throws it in Jamie’s face that Fergus’ confession did not dissuade her from her decision to marry Fergus).

Claire only had so much patience for Marsali’s insults. I loved how she finally put Marsali in her place: “The whore should have the bigger bed then, shouldn’t she?” 

Poor Jamie. Trying to get by on Claire’s ginger tea because he didn’t want to insult her. Thank goodness he let Mr. Willoughby administer his acupuncture. (I imagine the threat of the seasickness possibly leading to “twisted testicles” convinced him!) I’m also glad that they didn’t have Jamie walking around with the needles in him on the whole voyage like they did in the book. He looked foolish enough the one time he went on deck with the needles poking out of his face!

The scene in the moonlight was truly intimate. The moonlight seems to have drawn Jamie and Claire closer and rekindled the faith in their love.

Bathed in the moonlight, Claire was also able to share her pain about losing Bree. It was very touching when she recited part of “Good Night Moon.” 

I loved how the theme of the moonlight played out as Jamie admires Claire’s strands of gray hair: “I like the gray, the way the light hits it, like a piece of silver moonlight.”  And Claire’s response was perfect: “How could I not love a man who says such things?” How could we not all love Jamie? Yes, and we are reminded here about why Jamie is the “King of Men.”

Now I see why the show runners didn’t follow the book in terms of Jamie’s family slowly bringing back a few stones or coins from the treasure each year to help keep people at Lallybroch from starving. Apparently, the writers wanted Jamie to be able to question whether Young Ian’s capture was “punishment” for Jamie’s trying to use the treasure to pay off Laoghaire so he could be with Claire. Fortunately, Claire sets him straight.

Lesley and Hayes are still with Jamie. They appear to be the new “Highlanders” (i.e., taking on roles similar to Rupert and Angus). We need those kinds of characters for comic relief, to show how devoted some men are to Jamie, and to see the perspective of the common man throughout the journey.

I didn’t like that Claire refused to answer Jamie when he said he knew she belonged with him but that he would take her back to the stones if she wanted. She answered by just saying their priorty right now had to be Young Ian. I suppose they did that to build up the tension about whether Claire and Jamie would resolve their problems. But I still wanted to shake Claire at that moment.

On the other hand, I suppose it is more realistic that Claire would be  struggling with her decision to return to the past now that she is a  woman of 50. (It’s one thing to deal with all the danger of the past when you are in your twenties; another thing to do so in your 50s.)  It could be argued Claire should have struggled with that a bit more in the book.

Perfect casting for Captain Leonard! It is clear he is barely an adult and way over his head with the responsibility thrust upon him to sail what must have seemed to him to be a plague ship. It isn’t surprising that he literally kidnapped Claire in order to try to save his crew. (Although it was not fair to Claire or Jamie at all.)
