The Worship of Patriarch Subodhi, Sun Wukong's First Master
Those who have read Journey to the West (Xiyouji, 西遊記, 1592) will know that Sun Wukong (孫悟空) studies under the Buddho-Daoist sage, Patriarch Subodhi (Xuputi zushi, 須菩提祖師; a.k.a. “Patriarch Bodhi,” Puti zushi, 菩提祖師), to learn magic, martial arts, medicine, and the secret to immortality. My interest in him led to a lengthy blog article several years ago.
Now, I'm happy to report that I've learned of three(!) folk temples that worship him. Two are in Taiwan and one is in Singapore. Two of the three have verified that his worship was requested by the Monkey King, who is also venerated in these places. I'm waiting for info about the third.
Here are images of the religious statues in the order I learned about them.
1) Palace of Divine Response to the Imperial Decree (of Sanchong District, New Taipei, Taiwan) (Sanchong Yuzhi tianying gong, 三重玉旨天應宮).
Subodhi is generally depicted as a Daoist immortal in popular culture, but this idol draws upon imagery from a Journey to the West poem that describes him in Buddhist terms (see sect. 2.3 of my article for more info).
2) Palace of Treasured Virtue (Baode gong, 寶德宮) (Singapore)
This idol depicts him as a Daoist immortal. Here is a clip of the recent eye-opening ceremony. Thank you to tangki (spirit-medium) "Nick" Thng Fu Jie for the photo.
3) Palace of the Southern Heaven (of Small Liuqiu Island, Pingtung, Taiwan) (Xiaoliuqiu Nantian gong, 小琉球南天宮)
This idol also depicts him as a Daoist immortal. Hopefully I can get a clearer picture minus the ritual cape.
