The Fantastic Planet had a release date of December 1, 1973. The animated sci-fi French and Czechoslovakian production was prolonged due to the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia. The film won a special prize when it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973. The film became the first animated film to recieve a PG rating in the United States, probably due to nudity and violence. The movie was based on the French sci-fi novel Oms en Se'rie. In 2016, Rolling Stone magazine rated it the 36th greatest animated film of all time. It is also one of the very few animated films to be included in the Critereon Collection.
