Fuck Christmas. You go back to the family, wherever they are, and end up just rehashing the same old shit. Everyone hates everyone, the kids are all obnoxious shits, same old same old. This audacious piece of trash attempts to be the most faithful recreation of the Christmas experience possible by being a completely incomprehensible mess, just noisy scenes of family get-together with little point and even less intelligible dialogue, dipshits from Long Island screaming at one another. There is a vague sense of existentialist dread attached, but to what point? The film attempts plot by attaching a second, equally listless thread in the teens who try to go out and be rebellious, but it’s helmed by Francesca Scorsese who has to get back in time to make a TikTok with her director daddy sometime soon so we can’t be too risky. Sometimes tone and general mood is enough to elevate a piece of film, but that was absolutely not the case here. If I wanted to rewatch VHS tapes of family Christmas past, I’d throw them into the bonfire myself, thank you very much.

Perhaps the greatest waste of all this comes in the bizarre through-line of Michael Cera and his buddy cop. It would have been so much better were they to remain wholly nonverbal their entire screentime. Sadly they had to start speaking at length. Nothing can be trusted.
