A NEW SIDE.

Matt was rambling. It was something he did all the time, something you'd grown accustomed to, and within St. Denis Hospital it was more often than not a string of uncertain questions, ridiculous exclamations of a mistake he'd made, and constant apologies for something you weren't even sure were warranted. It was endearing, in a way. He just wouldn't shut up around you.
Now was no different. Except this time, he actually sounded confident in what he was saying. No pauses, questions, or 'sorry's in sight. You watched him with muted fascination. Who was he and what had he done with your Matt?
"This is where the cows graze. Grass is watered, fertilized, and sprayed for bugs on a regular basis. I used to do this back before I landed the nursing job. Oh, be careful, it's a bit muddy there... sometimes the creek overflows during this time of year."
Matt held out his hand for you to take, helping you hop over the large patch of damp soil. He was showing you around the farm he'd grown up in. The two of you had a week off for vacation, but since your family was all the way across the country, Matt had asked if you wanted to tag along with him. Though hesitant, you'd agreed, seeing no reason why not to. Plus, you thought it would be fun to see him in overalls and a straw hat rather than scrubs.
"Thanks," you said, giving him a small smile, which earned you a shy nod in response. His hands pulled away from yours to stuff into his pockets.
"Come on. You want to see the horses?"
"Don't take this the wrong way," you began tentatively, watching with rapt interest as he brushed the mane of a large chestnut horse name Clopper.
"Uh-oh. I've heard that before." Matt winced at the thought of his coworkers reprimanding him for doing something wrong in the hospital.
"No, no," you said, nudging his foot with a little laugh. "Nothing bad. I was just gonna say that I'm surprised that you're so... uh, competent with animals? If that's the right word?"
Tilting his head in thought, Matt seemed stuck between wanting to shrug it off nonchalantly and bashfully thank you. With a shy flourish of his free hand, he said, "Well, yeah, I sort of... spent my whole life here, so... it's like the back of my palm at this point. Not that I remember what the back of my palm looks like, actually. Is that normal?"
Matt began busying himself with studying his knuckles. His cheeks were pink, even though it was slightly darker in the stables. Slits of dusky light filtered in between the wooden panels of the walls. It would be sunset soon, and you would have to go in to greet his parents before long. Your stomach twisted nervously. This felt much more like meeting a boyfriend's parents than visiting a friend's home - partly because Matt had told you about how... traditional his parents were.
Before you could respond to him, there were voices coming from just outside the stable doors. There were three of them, two high-pitched ones you wagered were little elementary-aged girls and a lower-pitched one you would guess was a young teenage boy.
Before you knew it, the children were spilling into the stables, shrieking out, "Uncle Matt! Uncle Matt! Why didn't you tell us you were comin' home?!"
The two smaller girls were even smaller than you expected, just coming up to your hip. They ran forward and clung onto Matt's legs, tugging at his arms and his pants with excited fervor.
"Woah! Hey guys!" Matt exclaimed, now practically glowing. "Lucy, you look very nice. Lara, have you grown taller? You look like you've grown five inches since I last saw you!"
The two girls burst into a fit of giggles. Not only was he so... relaxed and confident in a country setting, but he was also good with kids? What other secrets was Matt hiding behind that bumbling persona of his at the hospital?
"Look, here, I want you to meet my friend." Matt gestured to you and told the girls your name. Both of their heads snapped in your direction.
Lucy, the shorter of the girls with her hair twisted into ribboned pigtails, grinned up at you. She was missing two teeth.
"You're so pretty!" she just about shrieked. "Just like Uncle Matt said!"
"Is that so?" you asked, quirking a brow in his direction.
Matt flushed an even deeper shade of pink. "Well, uh, that's not..." He stammered on for a few more seconds before exclaiming, "Daniel! Hey, buddy! There's my favorite nephew."
The younger boy, now drawn closer, looked like a younger carbon copy of Matt. "I'm your only nephew," he drawled with a roll of his eyes, though the affection was evident in his expression.
Dinner was a terse affair. Matt's parents were rather stiff around you, but you were as amicable as you could possibly be, and the food was surprisingly delicious despite Matt claiming it's nothing special in comparison to the hospital cafeteria. His nieces and nephew certainly helped with the delicate atmosphere, filling up the awkward pauses with excited chatters and curious questions directed to both you and Matt.
After you'd cleaned off your plate and declined a second serving, you and Matt took off to the rolling green hills in his backyard to stargaze. It was Matt's idea, and you were more than willing to take a break from polite smiles to his parents. The two of you laid down on the grass, elbows and knees grazing.
"Sorry if that was... weird."
"No, no," you reassured. "It was lovely. Honestly went better than I anticipated."
"Ugh. You don't know how good it is to hear that." Matt covered his eyes with the back of his palm and smiled. His chest rose and fell with a sigh. "It's good to be home. But it's so..."
"Stressful?"
"Yeah." His hand fell away from his eyes and landed back on the grass right beside yours. You itched to grab it. "Read my mind."
The two of you watched the stars blink as if they were city lights on a dark night.
"Do you ever get homesick?"
Matt took a second to consider your question. "Yeah. All the time. But being busy at the hospital helps."
And when he meant being busy, he really meant spending all his time mooning over you and trailing after you as often as he possibly could. But you didn't need to know that.
"You wouldn't mind picking up more of my shifts for me, then, would you?" you asked, an obvious joke on your end.
"I would if you wanted me to," said Matt, entirely too serious. You laughed and turned to him. Suddenly the two of you were all too close to one another, but you didn't mind. Matt didn't, either, though his cheeks burned a degree hotter.
"Matt. You gotta stop letting people walk all over you."
"I do that?"
"Yes! You do!"
"But..." His brows cinched. "Do I really? I wanted to be nice. And - you know what? I would gladly let you walk all over me if it made your day better."
You watched him over another few seconds, expression incredulous. There were stars reflected in his eyes. You tore your own away with a delayed inhale.
"You're ridiculous." There was a laugh to your tone, which kept the strange tension crackling between the two of you at bay.
"What does that mean?"
You gestured to him vaguely. "You're not joking but people only say that kind of stuff as a joke."
"Was I... not supposed to say that?" Matt winced at himself. He defaulted to the best excuse he had in his pocket. "I was homeschooled."
"I know." You laughed again, like windchimes on a day with a light breeze. "You're ridiculous in a good way. There. Feel better?"
"Tons." The way Matt said it, neither of you really knew if he was being sarcastic or not. "Anyways. To answer your original question - I miss home, but only sometimes. Most of the time I'm just excited for what I get to do tomorrow."
"And... here's the guest bedroom. I'm just down the hall if you need anything."
You nodded with a small smile. The hallway was completely dark, save for a small lamp down the end. Even though you were standing right in front of your room, ready to call it a night, you lingered in place, not yet ready to say goodbye to him. Matt seemed to be thinking along the same lines, because he made no move to pivot and leave, either. You stepped an inch closer to him.
"Thanks for - everything. I really like this place."
Matt thanked god that it was too dark to see him turn red. You'd already seen him do that far too much today.
"Well, I'm glad you do. I've kinda been... anxious about it the whole time before you got here."
"Really? I couldn't tell," you said teasingly, recalling the entire week at the hospital after he asked you to tag along, and how he was even more of a fumbling mess than usual. One time he almost used an epipen on a patient who needed stitches. He shivered at the memory.
"No, but seriously," you said, and you reached out to take his hand. It was warm and sturdy, albeit slightly damp with nervous sweat. You tried to suppress and endeared smile. "It's like seeing a whole new side to you. It's nice."
Matt made a strange noise that sounded somewhere between a hoot and a hiss. With his free hand, he scratched the back of his neck. "Sorry. That was weird. Uh-"
To save him from his misery, you cut him off with a quiet laugh, then leaned forward to press a chaste kiss to his cheek, and promptly turned to step into the bedroom. "Good night," you said airily, flashing him a cheeky smile.
Matt stood there for a good minute or two after you closed the door on him, hand lifted to press against the spot on his cheek where you'd kissed him. He felt like he was going to faint.
"Good night," he croaked after another thirty seconds, then turned to his own room, heading in with wobbly knees and a stunned expression.
You had heard him through the door, and smothered a laugh to yourself as you readied for bed.
cw: oral!fem, maybe established relationship? or this could be a fuck buddy situation, sub!matt (a little bit of cocky!matt) kissing, teaching cuz he’s a (was) a virgin, r calls matt “matty” once, and cum eating…NOT PROOFREAD
a/n: OKAY SORRY ITS TAKEN ME SOOO LONG BUT WARNING IVE GOT SOME ST DENIS CATCHING UP TO DO BUT HERE ARE MY HEADCANONS (also these aren’t a lot but im tryna run through this request so bear with me plssss) -> request !
✿. matt is a virgin, duh. totally and completely inexperienced. i think he’d had his first kiss when he was really young but never did it again because it was wrong, but he’s got you as his teacher and you’re such a good teacher. he tells you that A LOT. breathing heavy as he’s between your legs, grinning up at you with a compliment before dipping back down, making sure to use all of your instructions on how to make you feel good.
✿. matt lovessssss making you feel good. it’s his main goal before anything. started off with you kissing up and down his neck and leaving blemishes—that’ll definitely earn him a few looks and questions the next day—as you hands went up and down his weeping cock. he gasped and grabs on to your hands and you ask him what’s wrong, and he replies with a “nothing! n-nothing. it just feels really good that’s all,” and matt didn’t know it was possible to feel that good. he’s never touched himself without a feeling of guilt washing over him and forcing him to stop, but this was like a little piece of heaven just for him. and matt wants to give you the heaven that he feels. so after you had him cum all over your hands—and shoots so far that his spend hit the hem of your shirt, he wants his turns. saying something like, “i..i don’t know how to do—obviously—but i want to know. f-for you.”
✿. matt doesn’t last very long. the first time he sank into you, your grip sent him off a cliff and his seed shot deep inside you. he felt terrible. how was he gonna make you feel good if he could last longer than..4 seconds. but you stroke the back of his neck and tell him it’s alright. that it’s normal for his first time and it’s nothing to be ashamed of, and he begs to make it up to you, already dropping between your thighs and hiss as his cock rubs against your sheets. “but matty, y-you just—“ “s’okay. i’ll be..cleaning it out,” and he makes you cum twice and you have to shove his head away before he tried to give you another one.
✿. matt is a sub, but sometimes a confidence boost would strike and he gets a little cocky. you wonder what’s gotten into him, laughing at the smirk on his face as he scrolls into your apartment and drops his bag near the door. “you seem happy..” you said, narrowing your eyes a bit to see if you could figure out what it was visually—you don’t. “i am..” “and why is that,” you ask, watching the way he tracks towards your spot on the couch and shrugs. he stands between your legs and towers over you with that same dopey smirk on his lips. “are you busy?” “i was gonna watch a show but it doesn’t mean all that important right—“ and like that he’s on your lips, hands cradling your jaw and he uses everything you taught him about being a good kisser, and the hard work paid off. your brains gone dizzy as you ball your fist into jacket and whimper into his mouth. he pulls away and this time your the one chasing his lips and it makes a proud feeling swell in his chest. “you wanna have sex here or in your bed. o-or the floor would be fine but it’ll mess up your hair..”
A/N: Anddd for my final wintercore (not really, I plan on doing some feb fluff stuff next month) which I planned to do three piece anthologies for anyway…I decided to just do it and write something for Matt because why do I keep putting it off? Even if it doesn’t do numbers at least I tried writing for a new character! + not anything big.
S/N: This is a fun little show and I just realized who Mekki reminds me of…Sid from skins uk—IYKYK!
PROMPTS ARE FROM HERE & I’m using: ¹²⁾ being stuck at work for the night, watching everyone else celebrate from afar + ¹⁹⁾ waking up the next morning in the wreckage of last night’s party.
Matt Pearson usually tries to remain off his phone when he’s on shift. He’s pretty good at it too. I mean sure, mobile devices can surely be useful and wasteful all mixed into one but he slowly realized it could be beneficial when it came to his new lifestyle.
It’s New Year’s Eve and St. Denis Medical is surprisingly quiet. It’s nice, almost peaceful if Bruce wasn’t constantly sending Matt pictures of women Matt matched with on a dating app? Which Matt was positive he didn’t sign up for. After the fourth photo, Matt stopped texting back, he hated to do it since he and Bruce were becoming buddies but there was no way Matt was ready to jump into a relationship or any one night stands.
That thought alone made Matt’s stomach queasy. The electrolytes definitely helped but pushing the thought to the back of his head was easier said than done.
He couldn’t even enjoy his dinner, the time being after 5pm and he had at least two more hours on his shift. The twelve hour shifts were certainly helping Matt to cover the rent on the two-bedroom apartment he now occupied alone.
Since she left.
His stomach turns as he leans over the desk, thumbs halting over the search bar to type the first letter of her name, knowing she would always be in his recents.
They were on a time difference now. Landed herself a dream job elsewhere that allowed her to put her art-history degree to good use.
She already had to be into the new year, oceans away, probably 1am and Matt can’t help but to wonder what she was up to, how she entered the new year.
So he makes the choice of watching her stories.
Watched how London is treating her, how she embraces it.
The pictures on the feed weren’t enough updates and she’s started posting less there. So sitting on her stories gave Matt something to hold onto…even with people telling him to simply move on.
Except for tonight?
Her stories aren’t accessible—blank except for her pretty profile picture and Matt finds that hard to believe.
He’s got it down, her routine of when she posts—not to be creepy or anything—and even if she was staying in for a major holiday, there would still be a post.
“Hey Serena, I hate to ask you this—
Matt starts, gaze picking up on the dark haired woman in scrubs who just took a seat at one of the computers.
Serena who’s also on her phone, peeks over at the brunette, “Yes she posted at the countdown. Looks like it was a sick party too.”
“Really?” Matt frowns, “How come I can’t see it?”
He shows his phone to Serena who hums and slowly nods her head, “Well considering that she and I are still friends on insta, it looks like she blocked you specifically from seeing her stories, buttercup. Sorry.”
Matt huffs and Serena eyes him almost in pity while she watches her friend sorta deflate. She opens her mouth attempting to smooth over what she just said so causally to the guy that’s just getting used to the modern world.
“I uh. Thanks for confirming.” Matt frowns, “I’m sure she had valid reasons for this. Right?”
His eyes can’t help but to seek reassurance from the crew behind him before turning back to Serena.
“Oh god, Matt.” Serena scowls, “It’s fine to say that her hiding her stories from you hurts your feelings a little bit! I can show you her stories if you want—
Matt quickly shakes his head, “N-No. That’s okay. I respect her choice.”
“I think you should call her. It’ll be a new year for us soon but clearly it’s the same feelings. I don’t know if you’re down for long distance but if you’re still in love with her—which is so obvious that you are. You should say that.” Serena advises, holding his share before placing her phone down and turning her attention to the computer instead.
Matt slowly dips his head, taking in Serena’s words before walking off, finding someplace less anxiety driven. He’s not sure how long he’s walking, even checking over his shoulder to make sure he’s not needed…but he finds himself thinking about how empty the apartment feels even with the things that still linger of her.
She’s left behind a few penguin classics that he offered to ship out to her. The books contain annotations scribbled in and pressed flowers from the spring used as bookmarks. Matt still wears the x-files t-shirt she gifted him because they started binge-watching the show during one of his off days—which is hardly ever—when Oregon got hit with a major thunderstorm back in the beginning of September.
Matt still finds traces of her there and started to learn to give her space, although she constantly held space in his mind.
This blocking from viewing her stories? Made this break-up seem all a little too real.
The reality is that it is real.
That they did break-up and it hurt like hell.
Matt’s breathing gets caught in his throat and he thinks his contacts are playing tricks on him when he catches her name at the top of his screen. He doesn’t want to seem too eager but he can’t tell you how many seconds he waited to answer.
Far in London, she awakes on the floor in front of the couch. Her eyes first pick up on cans, then glitter and smells something rank close by. She doesn’t have to fully turn her head to know that it’s most likely vomit. She sits up on her elbow and forearm, claw-clip digging into the back of her scalp while her eyes are in slits.
It’s her flat alright but she didn’t expect the wreckage afterwards to provide her with a hangover headache. Usually she does well at managing her social drinking so she didn’t have to deal with hangovers the next day but these Brits party different compared to Americans.
Her mouth is dry and there’s a tug in her chest that has her fully sitting up. Her knuckles dig into her eye sockets, rubbing the sand away before she attempts to get up onto her feet. She stumbles, laughing to herself before making her way around to the kitchen.
Which is also a mess.
She nearly slips on what she thinks is a pig in a blanket.
A few moments later a shriek leaves her mouth as she spots her roommates ferret, Jarrett napping in the kitchen sink.
“Nope.” She moves to the fridge, flinching at the lights, finding apple juice and a phone?
Her phone.
She grabs that last.
The phone rings.
He picks up on the sixth ring.
“Hi, Matt. Happy New Year.”
She hears him inhale and can almost picture the usual small smile that appears on his face.
He greets her back, “Hi,” and says her name with a sigh. Soft like the fluff of snow, “…I miss you.”
