Character: Maxine Bohen

Their importance: Maxine is an investigator from the Conviction Integrity Unit. She is a black woman, an ex-cop, and a mother to a 12-year-old boy; the interaction of the different aspects of her identity are discussed on the show. She is a character with a lot of honesty and integrity, as she is loyal to both her current and her former professions but quick to address what she perceives to be wrongdoing or corruption. She is also a fiercely protective mother and has a good relationship with her father. Additionally, she openly acknowledges that she developed an addiction to painkillers when she was shot on the job. Although she has a relapse at one point, she mentions meeting up with her sponsor in one episode and is presumably able to stop taking painkillers again.
