Merging Oceans † {closed rp w/walterdornesparadox}
Life had not gotten better, but it had grown more…tolerable.
The trial had gone much as could have been expected. In other words, quite bad and very deeply mortifying for Walter. Though he was not being put on trial for being my lover, it have certainly come up as a topic for examination. It’s not as though we had ever put in the effort to hide it, exactly. Anyone with half a brain could have figured it out, but Walter had always been keen to keep his private life behind closed doors. Through stiff lips he had answered every question with the rawest of honesty, and even if they had not asked specifically personal questions, the very ask of saying ‘yes’ to the pointed question of ‘Is it a fact that you and Mr. Lupei are romantically involved?’ had made his pupils shrink to the size of pin-points even is the rest of his face remained neutral. As for me, I’d suffered through a psychological exam before being allowed to return to duty. It had been weird to talk to another person about my existence as it was. Granted, Arthur had enjoyed playfully using the popular theories of psychology of the day to analyze me, but there was a vast different between a lush’s party game and being examined by a professional. Though I’d been cleared for work, the therapist had insisted I consider making it a habit to arrange visitations. I’d told them I’d think about it. - Of course I wouldn’t for one second. So life moved on: I was back on the hunt, however irritable and edgy to the point of paranoia, Walter was on probation, and we’d been moved to a safehouse in the city. It was a far cry from the old flat, a studio apartment in a district undergoing heavy gentrification. There was an influx of young professionals and eccentric nouveau-riche and if there were still run down sections and packs of young artists with sub-cultural leanings, no one seemed to really notice us, which I suppose was the point, wasn’t it? All the other little problems were slowly being sorted, though it was still a frustrating sort of business. We were no closer to a resolution to stopping the terrorist organization and they were still making violent movements. The latest incident had involved Iscariot’s Paladin - Miss Wolfe, which had only been a pleasure to hear in that it might act as powerful bargaining chip when it came to talks with the archbishop.
The most fortunate development was Walter’s slowly improving vision. It was still not certain that he would ever fully regain it but it had been restored to the point that corrective lenses were a viable solution. Walter was less than amused by the prospect, despite the promise of being able to see me as something other than an collection of blurry shapes. I didn’t take offense. He’d been the same way when he’d finally been forced to deal with the failing vision of his right eye back when he had been human. On the day that he was being fitted with his glasses, he insisted that I be the one to drive him to the optometrist. He seemed agitated, but had spoken little during the trip. I wisely decided that I would not yet note that I was quite eager to see him in his new accessories, thinking that he’d look so deceptively, coyly handsome. He would not allow me to remain after I escorted him to the doctor’s office and I was banished to the lobby, where I browsed the frames and idly tried on a few for the sake of sheer bored amusement. They looked weird with my scarlet eyes peering back at me, framed garishly by the rims. After an annoyingly long fifteen minute’s time, he emerged from the office looking just as charming as I’d imagined. I smirked lightly, though his eyes still darted slightly and his gait was somewhat unsure, either out of habit or from adjusting to seeing through the lenses. “Well…how do they feel?” I queried as my gaze lingered warmly as his countenance.
