Cluster Rich Galaxy
M49 // Hinrich Eylers
M49 is a giant elliptical galaxy and one of the many members of the Virgo Cluster (which we'll see in due time!). This elliptical galaxy is the brightest galaxy in the cluster, and at 157,000 light years across, it is larger than both our galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy!
Being an elliptical galaxy, it is not undergoing any star formation nor has it in several billion years. The galaxy is yellowish, containing mostly stars that are older and redder than the Sun.
