This sculpture is one of my most prized possessions. The pedestal is a rare piece of ebony. The dung ball was turned by my father-in-law John Sparling - a renowned wood turner of Gloucestershire. He made me this piece as a gift for the launch of #BeetleBoy. The silver dung beetle was cast in his brother’s workshop. When the sun hits it in the morning it sets my work ethic for the day. For a story is rather like a dung ball, gathered from the waste of a greater animal, out of which hatches new life. Kryp

Kryp av M G Leonard är en mellanåldersbok som utspelar sig i nutid i England. Den handlar om Darkus som tvingas bo hos sin farbror Max som är professor i arkeologi. Darkus mamma är död och hans pappa, som är vetenskaplig chef för Naturhistoriska museet, har försvunnit när han studerat skalbaggar, utan ett spår och dessutom från ett låst rum.

Darkus är övertygad om att hans pappa blivit kidnappad och han får hjälp av sina nya vänner Virginia och Bertolt att leta efter honom.

Hos grannarna kryllar det av skalbaggar och en dag upptäcker Darkus att han kan prata med en av dem. Det blir början till ett fartfyllt och spännande men också roligt äventyr där vännerna söker efter Darkus pappa och samtidgit försöker rädda sina nya vänner skalbaggarna.

Kryp är den första boken i en trilogi om Darkus och de magiska skalbaggarna och deras äventyr. Jag rekommenderar varmt den här boken som är bra skriven med härligt driv och massor av spänning och humor. Fascinerande och lärorikt om insekter och jättebra för alla oss som inte är så förtjusta i insekter.

My picturebook with illustrator Daniel Rieley, The Tale of a Toothbrush, features in the new exhibition at The Story Museum ‘Brilli-ANT!’  about how small creatures can make a big difference.

It was selected by a mix of young story curators, climate advisors & the museum team, as a story tackling ideas for climate action.

If you’re in Oxford, England, this summer so visit the museum. It’s magical.
