the tanker chapter took me over 3 and a half hours to complete

I like how snake carefully steps around the bodies of unconscious guards but in ground zeroes and the phantom pain big boss won’t even try to avoid trampling anybody who’s on the ground for any reason at all

okay I say pretty often that i’m bad at stealth games but i just picked up metal gear solid 2 for the first time since i got stuck at the tanker in 2014 and i think i need to give an example of just how bad i am with the story of how i, just now, died to the first enemy guard in the entire game

i spent the first couple minutes of the game running around and hitting every dead end within 20 meters of snake’s starting location before finding the guard. i waited, back against a corner, for the guard to turn around. when he finally does, i take the initiative and start to run up behind him

halfway to within range, i realize i don’t know what button to press to do a melee takedown or anything of the sort. instead of backing off and looking up the controls, i decide to pick a button to press and pray. i decide on square, and snake immediately gets the guard’s attention by holding him up. i panic, because the guard is still very much conscious, even if he probably won’t attack me quite yet.

i think i pressed triangle next, i’m not sure, but whatever i did made snake catapult himself off the side of the tanker, holding onto a ledge with nothing below him but the cold new york city harbor. i hang there for a few seconds, waiting for the guard to do...something about the madman that just held him up at gunpoint only to jump off the side of the boat without harming so much as a hair on his head. but instead of calling for help, instead of sounding the alarm, instead of shooting at snake with the gun the he most certainly was carrying, he passes out cold.

i stay exactly where i am for a few more seconds, only then noticing the dwindling grip meter in the upper right corner of the screen and realizing, yet again, i don’t know what button to press to get snake to lift himself back up onto the tanker. for one reason or another, i decide to press the x button and see what happens.

snake lets go of the ledge and falls to his death.
