Vancouver rock duo, Mi’ens, released their third full-length album Future Child on September 25th. With Kim Glennie shredding the guitar and mastering loops and Moog (synth), while Evan Heggen weaves in his “polyrythmic blastbeats” on the drums, this album is sure to bring you to a place of wonderment and fascination.
Mi’ens opens the album with the title track, “Future Child.” This track features a thematically satisfactory futuristic guitar intro, followed by an upbeat and energetic drum beat. This spaced-out accumulation of chaos and wonder brings an evocative start to the album.
“Charge Dodger” brings along this fuzzy, edging on scratchy intro on the electric guitar. This, coupled with the slow beat of the drums, make for an almost eerie atmosphere. This sound builds until a climax of hypnotic, laser beam-esque pandemonium, which is executed flawlessly in this track.
We see a similar, yet far more echoey approach in the track “Rifft Valley,” which fits perfectly with the title of the song. The reverberation that rings through this song blends beautifully with the idea of an echoing soundscape in the depths of such a geographical rift.
“Mondlandung,” or ‘moon landing’ in English, is a track that showcases all of Mi’ens’ best assets. From the solar flares of synth, to the retro groove of the guitar and drums, Mi’ens has created a track that speaks to the admiration of the constellations – as well as a song that makes you want to get up and dance.
For an album that features themes of space, the universe and the stars, Future Child did not disappoint. Mi’ens have a clear understanding of the messages and the soundscape that they want to put out into the world, and they nail it on the head with every track they create. In a time where there is such tension on the ground we live on, a record that explores a world beyond the stars is perfect.
