Microvolunteering is a concept where individuals take convenient, bite-sized actions, often from home, in support of a good cause! Sharing a photo of bats, making or donation or simply educating someone on the importance of bats can make all the difference in the world!

Microvolunteering Day

Feeling the itch to give back to the community but just can’t quite seem to get around to starting? Then Microvolunteering Day could be the solution! Microvolunteering is a simple concept: individuals take convenient, bite-sized actions, often from home, in support of a good cause. This can be anything from writing a letter to an elderly hospital patient or tagging internet photos to help the visually impaired. Microvolunteering Day aims to raise awareness of short, easy, active citizenship and encourage people to get involved. Use Microvolunteering Day to be that change you want to see, find a project you can support, and help make the world a better place – all from the comfort of your couch.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

We’ve listened to your feedback and I’m delighted to tell you about five exciting changes to Team Up this month.

1. Offer your time If you’re a Team Up volunteer then you can now offer a task without waiting for someone to post a request. Maybe you’re off to the tip and there’s room for another bag in the boot? Popping into town and passing that butchers with the great pies? Just fancy doing a bit of gardening whilst the sun shines? Offer your services on Team Up and someone might just take you up on them. 2. New task category: computers and phones With so much new technology available it can be useful having someone to go through how it works. Perhaps you’d like some help setting up your new phone or laptop, or a whistle-stop tour of online shopping? Post a computers and phones task and someone can come and show you how it’s done. You don’t have to be an expert to offer or accept a computers and phones task, just have a bit of experience. Log in to post a computers and phones task

3. Fresh new look We’ve updated the site to give it a bit of a facelift and make it easier to use. We hope you like it, please let us know if you have any feedback on how we can improve. Updated user guide You will have read our user guide when you first signed up, but we’ve included some new information and guidance in there so please do re-read it to make sure you understand what you’re agreeing to every time you Team Up. Read your updated user guide 5. Coming May 2015 – switch between helping and getting help and vice versa Some people have said that they’d like to help out from time to time, as well as receiving support from Team Up. There’s absolutely no pressure to do so, but if you feel up to helping someone else, then from next month you’ll be able to switch to being a helper by editing your profile settings. Changes in this direction will be subject to our usual security checks. If you’ve been helping out through Team Up and are affected by cancer then you can choose to receive support by simply switching user roles in your profile.

Please keep spreading the word about Team Up. You’re at the very forefront of a really exciting movement in how Macmillan offers services and we need to you be ambassadors for us. MicroVolunteering: Ways To Gain Experiance.

As a student, you may or may not have oppurtunities for an Internship to get “hands on” experiance with mapping data. If your like me and can’t afford to do an internship this year, there are other ways to get involved, via MicroVolunteering. 

Two important organizations exisit for this: 

Open Street Map, an open source tool that allows users from their homes to map the areas using local sourced people (pss it’s you!)  This is also the group that runs HOT ( Humanitarian OSM Team) http://hot.openstreetmap.org/

Another way to volunteer would be to do the same type of work however with a goverment agency. 

National Map Corps: Run by the USGS, this organization is similar to OSM in that it maps the same information just using a different platform and having the ability to interact with USGS isnt bad either.

Koodonation Online Throwdown Wins at IABC Toronto!

Last night was a big one for team Koodonation - we picked up an award in the Social Responsibility category at the IABC Toronto Ovation Awards. The Koodonation Online Throwdown is causing a stir in the awards world this season! Big thanks to everyone who shared their time and skills with us through the power of microvolunteering.

Of course we have to share a few pics after such a great night. We celebrated Koodonation style, in the spirit of social good!

Koodonation Wins Cause + Action Award!

Team Koodonation is stoked to announce that we've won an award from Strategy Magazine! Thanks to our awesome Koodonation Online Throwdown event, your support and the great folks at Strategy Magazine, we're taking home a Cause + Action award!

The Cause + Action awards are judged by a panel of experts. Programs are evaluated on brand DNA, uniqueness, awarness, legs and overall success.
