Something I’m not seeing talked about much is this reaction Ajax made
Like that’s not the first reaction I’d expect a character to make after being hit, unless they were used to it
Like that isn’t a look of shock right there, that is sadness, that is reflection after you thought you were passed a certain point and better than that
Which catches up to him in the next scene as he remembers that he wasn’t struck by just anyone
But by someone who he deems, and is seen as lesser than him,
This makes me theorize that 1. In Walrinian culture it isn’t unheard of for someone of Ajax’s status to still be disciplined by someone of higher status if older or 2. Ajax himself isn’t as high in status as he appears, and being smacked away like that reminded him of it
NON CAT RELATED DRAWINGS | Day 1
been drawing some NON-CATS to get me out of my comfort zone/art block. hopefully i'll be able to get to four more by this week!
Analyzing the scenes with Beebs and Ajax frame by frame a bit,
This is the face Beebs makes once Ajax appears, it’s the face of someone who knows something bad is about to happen and he’s preparing for it. An “oh god anything but this” face
Then we get the full view. To any outsider Ajax looks like a good pal who’s helping out his buddy, Beebs knows better know and is annoyed by tha facade Ajax is putting up, especially since he’s involved
Next scene shows that even clear as Beebs looks so done with the nice act Ajax has going on, and is just waiting to be able to book it, yet..
The minute Ajax’s turns to address him that annoyance turns into worry
He has a very malicious grin on his face as he mentions the dinner plans he and Beebs have, and in a blink and you’ll miss it moment he tightens his grip on Beebs as well. A clear warning that if Beebs doesn’t go along with this, something bad will happen
Which is why in general very next scene he has a sheepish grin on his face. The reason I think he gives into Ajax’s demand is for a couple different reason
1. The most obvious of which is that Ajax just paid for his arm repair and is now in debt to the go, and going along with dinner is a sure fire way to pay him back
2. A little less obvious but still very noticeable is because of Walrinian culture. We know from a little lore snippet from the creator that Walrinian value large tusks and bulk as something of hight status, so compared to Beebs Ajax is much higher up than him, and with Beebs already being seen as less in general it makes sense that in a way he would feel forced to follow Ajax, since he’s higher up than him
Which is proven in this scene. When he asks Ajax to leave he says please
He feels like he has to stay and hear Ajax out otherwise he’s dishonoring his culture/the debt his in
And while I’ve seen people say Beebs is a vegetarian (can’t remember) I also think he’s not eating also due to the fact Ajax is paying for his meal and eating it would mean other thing Ajax has over him.
So this whole scene shows that Beebs still in a way follows Walrinian culture, but only ti a very small degree, but that degree is still extremely bad and gives a small insight into what the culture at large may be about
