Spooky Action at a Distance - Chapter 5

i swear i haven't abandoned anything! it's just taking longer cos life.

i decided it needed something a bit more light-hearted after the last chapter. angst and angst all the time makes for boredom.

Chapter 5: Sam and MIn make friends with xenos. In the past, Sam gives Min a warning, and Min sows seeds of doubt for Sam.

“Stupid artifacts?” he asked, eyebrows raised. In all his lifetimes, he’d never talked about the actual artifacts and what they mean to any other Starborn. He was surprised by her derisive tone.

“Yes, stupid. Stupid metal plates.” She slammed another shot. “They’re dumb. So stupid. Stupid race. Stupid people. Stupid powers. All of it. Just dumb.”

He stared at her agog, “They’re what give us meaning!” he exclaimed, though it came out louder and more slurred than he meant.

She gave him a side eye, “For you, you mean.”

“They should mean everything for us Starborn!”

Min shook her head and laughed, “Not for me!” she said cynically.

“Either I’m too drunk, or I don’t get it. How can the artifacts don’t mean anything? They’re why we’re here. This is why we’re Starborn. We have a reason, and the artifacts are part of that!”

She laughed again, “Maybe to you, but not to me,” she reiterated. She stood up and started dancing again, this time just swaying a little in time to the music, punctuating her words with movement, “In the grand scheme of things, nothing matters. Not you, not me, not the artifacts, and not the damned Unity. One day, we’ll either freeze to death from expansion, or get crunched into pure energy. And, that’s it.” She poked him in the chest, “Th-th-that’s all folks!” she quoted.

He shook his head, “But the Unity grants us more than that now.”

“Nope. Nothing beats entropy in the end. The Great Devourer of all.”

“But the Unity gives access to the multiverse!” he exclaimed. He felt like her words were bothering more than they should.

“Nope, the Unity is an entropy machine,” she answered and sat back down. It was too hard to dance.

“If anything, the Unity is the opposite!”

Min leaned in across the table, “Then answer me this, why do we always end up at the same place. The same time? Sure, the details of the universe will be different, spin up, spin down, the waveform collapses. Boom, another universe is formed. But!” and here she finished her shot and slammed the shot glass onto the table so hard that it cracked, “It’s. Always. The. Same. Place. We live the same lives over and over again. Never progressing, never getting further. We gather the artifacts, get to the Unity, then BOOM, off to start it all over again.” She stared at the shot glass, noticing the crack that formed along the lip. “We are entropy. We never get out. We never change. Chasing the damned artifacts, the next universe. Never leaving. Never learning. Never changing. Just disintegrating,” she ended softly. “Just…stuck. Like how I was stuck in the Syndicate.”
