Saihara-chan, you meanie!” A stern scowl appeared on his face, though it was short-lived and quickly replaced with a teasing grin. “Ah, that was a lie, though!~ I can’t believe you’ve really never heard of Pocky Day! It’s a day where you’re supposed to eat and share pocky with people, and one of the most popular ways to do that is the pocky game.~ Nishishi.~ What do you say, Saihara-chan? Wanna play?”

Hanon wasn’t sure why she was quiete so impulsive to someone she hardly knew, but it felt... okay? In retrospect, she was as shocked as he was at such a request. But she blamed the asinine request on the fact that the azurette was tired. Cause that made sense, right? “I’m okay... maybe? My flight was cancelled so I’ve been up all night waiting for the next one. I just really want to lay down.”

“I’m used to the stares,” Maki spoke up. With the secret of her profession out in the open, most of the Academy’s students avoided her. Some whispered and point. Her gaze was kept forward, rather than around her. A glare could have shut most of them up, but she wasn’t going to waste her time on that. “You don’t need to be so concerned about it, Saihara-kun.”

“Saihara-chan, don’t tell me you forgot about our plans already! Geez, I can’t believe I had to come here just to get you! You’re late, and we’re going to run out of time if we don’t hurry!” 

Without warning or apology, Kokichi looped his arm around the detective’s own and proceeded to attempt dragging Shuichi out of the dining hall. This earned both of them several confused glances from their classmates, but the younger of the two paid them no mind. If they wanted to think he was up to something nefarious, that was their business. He was accustomed to the stares of confusion and doubt, and none of the others were interesting enough to warrant his attention at the moment anyway. Shuichi, on the other hand, was a different matter entirely. The detective always saw through his lies, even catching little, tiny glimpses of the truth at times, and he hoped this time would be no different.

Of course that was what Shuichi assumed, beating him to his own comeback. It was only natural, really. Usually, hearing someone else call him out on his lies didn’t bother him. In fact, he was almost always amused when it happened, because it meant the person doing so was smart enough to see through his deception. There was just one problem this time.

His words hadn’t been a lie.

They were some of the most honest words he’d ever spoken, perhaps even the most honest words he’d ever spoken, as far as he could remember. He didn’t want to be alone. Every time he would go off on his own to choreograph or instigate his plans, or to investigate, or even just to have some time to himself so that he could think in peace…he was constantly lying to himself. It was the easiest thing for him to do. Lying came second nature to him, so much so that he could even fool himself if he tried hard enough.

But that was the trouble with lies; they could be kinder than the truth.

He missed the other members of DICE. They were the only ones who knew when to believe him; when to trust him. He’d shown all of them, in one way or another, how to read between the lines of what he said when he lied. They understood him. They were his friends; his family. He loved them all as a brother who completely adored his siblings. But at this awful school, while he was stuck in an even more awful killing game…things were different.

No one here believed him, and he didn’t blame them for it. Why should they, knowing how often he lied? Frankly, why should he believe any of them in turn, knowing that one of them was the mastermind, and the rest were all potential murderers? He had every right to be paranoid.

But he’d had hope that maybe, just maybe, someone among his classmates would be curious enough—would care enough—to want to understand him. After he’d realized what a clever detective Shuichi could be with a little help in the right direction, that hope had grown, and with it, admiration and affection were both born against his better judgement. And now…his honesty had been shot down by that very same object of affection, using his own words against him.

He was crushed.

“…Yeah, you’re right, Saihara-chan.” His voice was low and quiet, his face completely blank and devoid of the pain he felt, and he turned to put his back to the detective. Ironically, his agreement was the real lie. He just didn’t know if, after feeling so much pain so quickly, opening up would even be worth it. If Shuichi didn’t want to give him a chance, then why bother telling the truth a second time?

His eyes turned to the floor, downcast and fixated on a single point, though he tried not to lower his head. He tried to keep it all in, like he would have any other time someone doubted him, and he mentally fought to reconstruct all the walls that he’d let down with one single admission, but he couldn’t do it in time.

Hot tears welled up in his eyes, and no sooner had he tried to blink them away than they fell, streaming down his cheeks and dripping onto the floor near his feet. His hands balled into fists at his sides as his body began to tremble, and he bit down painfully hard on his lower lip, squeezing his eyes shut, but to no avail. The tears wouldn’t stop, and soon he couldn’t stay quiet either, whimpering and sniffling while he tried and failed over and over to force himself to calm down. He wanted to run and flee, if only to put some more distance between himself and Shuichi, but even his feet wouldn’t cooperate with him, keeping him rooted where he stood.

“Saihara-chan...you’re awful...!”

Oumasai. Ohhhhhh, gosh. Forgive me if I ramble, and I’m probably going to repeat some stuff you’ve said and/or stuff I’ve told you already.

Oumasai is definitely my V3 OTP. I know we’ve discussed it before, but it’s as if their characters were written for them to be perfect for each other. 

One of my absolute favorite things about the ship is that we get undeniable confirmation that Shuichi is Ouma’s ideal exactly as he is, no off-the-wall scenario, backstory modification, or personality modification needed. Ouma wouldn’t change a single thing about Shuichi, and he loves him, flaws and all. He doesn’t even want a ‘perfect’ version of a detective—he just wants Shuichi. Even though we only find this out in Ouma’s love suite scene, it’s huge to me because it speaks volumes about just how in love Ouma is. He accepts Shuichi’s flaws and insecurities, and as we know from what happens in the plot of the game, he encourages Shuichi to move past them. if you’re able to read between the lines of some of Ouma’s dialogue in that scene, it’s also easy to see that he, in his own way, proves that he cares about how Shuichi would feel about being with him. He can be forward and overbearing at times, but I firmly believe that if he started to make a move and Shuichi sincerely told him to stop and back off, he’d back off.

Anyway, whenever I first started playing the game, I actually had no idea if I was going to like Ouma or not. I knew I wanted to, because what little I knew of his character made me think that there was a good chance I’d like him, but I was also worried that I wouldn’t like him because I’d caught wind that he was a pretty controversial character. Then as the game progressed, I found out why—but thanks to accidentally spoiling myself on who the mastermind really was, I knew to read between the lines and keep an eye out for his motivation/reasoning for doing everything. I’m actually glad I spoiled myself in a sense, because if I hadn’t, I might have taken Ouma’s actions at face value instead. Knowing that it was all an act gave me the chance to see through the lies and pay attention to other aspects of his character, like how he was so willing to throw himself under the proverbial bus just to give everyone else an enemy to focus on while he conducted his own investigations and worked on a strategy to end the killing game. He already had his reputation as a liar, and he took advantage of it, emphasizing it on purpose to make people question him and hate him—hoping that it would work, but also wishing deep down that even just one other person would realize what he was doing.

The game doesn’t give us much of this, because even when Ouma tells the truth during some very important moments, the others automatically assume he’s lying. It’s heartbreaking, but none of the other characters learn the ‘why’ behind his actions until after he’s gone (or almost gone), and even then, most of them still hate him, doubt him, or both. 

That’s where Shuichi comes in, because as a detective, Shuichi is someone who has the skills to look at Ouma and see beyond that lying facade he presents to the world. It wouldn’t happen right away, because Ouma won’t open up that easily, but as I said in the beginning of this, they’re perfect for each other. Because of their unique skill sets, each of them have the ability to bring the other’s walls down—Shuichi as a detective figuring out the truth in Ouma’s lies and ultimately Ouma himself, and Ouma reading Shuichi so well that the detective may as well open up more and choose to be honest with him. 

That brings up another point too—Ouma desperately wants someone to be intrigued by him enough that they want to figure him out. He’s constantly calling things (and people) “interesting” or “boring,” and he wants to be someone else’s “interesting.” He wants someone to care enough, to be curious enough that they don’t walk away the minute he starts messing with them. Deep down, all he wants is affection and attention that proves someone cares about him; that they, even if only a little, understand him. He wants someone who can look past his lies to see the truth that he hides from the rest of the world, and who better to do that than the Ultimate Detective?

Shuichi isn’t a perfect detective, of course, but “perfect” doesn’t matter to Ouma. We see it over and over again in the game—Ouma is constantly offering Shuichi support, helping with investigations and trials to give the detective that little extra push of guidance and encouragement to reveal the culprit. He’s hardly ever direct about it, but he’ll point out evidence or contradictions, or sometimes purposely make contradictions himself to make sure that incorrect verdicts are avoided in the long run. 

He honestly just wants to help, and he’s all too happy to help Shuichi. In fact, that’s when he sounds the happiest in the entire game, which means it does both of them a world of good. It makes Ouma happy, while at the same time giving Shuichi the support he needs. They’re both scared of the truth in their own way, but together, they can help each other through their fears.

......This is getting so long by now, so I’ll stop here. Tl;dr I love this ship so much and they’re perfect. <333333
