Onyx - SOS [Mind Records]
Onyx - Call of the Wild
Boston’s Judd Stone spent the late 70′s latched to tough-talking bar rockers like Johnny Barnes, probably in the hopes that he’d get a call from G.E Smith one day with an invitation to the big city (New Haven, where Smith lived at the time). He eventually soured on New England drunk rock. Soon enough he met a British vocalist and profesional model named Beveur, who introduced him to the year 1981 and all the shoulder pads that went with it. Stone ditched his (likely) dream of one day standing opposite G.E Smith on stage and intensely closing his eyes at him in the midst of duel solos, opting instead for shoulder pads.
Relying on one synthesizer and a drum kit that carried an excess amount of responsibility, Stone and Beveur formed Onyx. The two quickly built their sound into something much larger than its parts. In their brief tenure they released two excellent singles on Nu-Age Records between 1981 and 1982, that both struck the perfect balance between New Wave, bold production, and whatever it is that people probably like about Durutti Column (I wouldn’t know, never heard em).
Now MIND Records will be releasing all six of their studio tracks on one vinyl LP in June. Digital available now and streaming:
