Child Murder Solved 3 Decades Later
On 19th November 1988, 9-year-old Michaela Garecht and her friend were playing on their scooters in the Rainbow Grocery parking lot in Hayward. The girls went to buy snacks at a nearby shop and when they came out one of the scooters had been moved next to a car. The FBI has since stated they believe that when Michaela went to move the scooter back the driver abducted her. The driver was described as an unidentified Caucasian male between 18-24 years old. Michaela's friend ran back to the shop to get help but by the time she returned with the clerk the vehicle and Michaela were gone. Michaela was never seen again. The case eventually went cold and remained unsolved.
Three decades later, in 2020, David Misch a convicted murderer was arrested and charged with the 1988 cold case of Michaela's abduction and murder.
Misch has been incarcerated at the state prison medical facility for the stabbing of a 36-year-old woman. He has also been charged with two cold case murders from 1986.
