NINE MINUTES UNTIL DETONATION
The whole shock of what just happened gets pushed into the background pretty quickly as Leon drags you out of the elevator. You both end up in some sort of hallway with a lot of monitors, one showing nothing but static until Leon presses a button that shows someone.
“Who's this?” Leon squints his eyes, trying to see who the person is which both of you could make out to be staring into the camera. Suddenly Leon's eyes sparkle, a huge grin on his face as the face of a young woman gets projected onto the monitor.
“Claire!”
“Leon? You're down here too!?”
Leon leans away to look back from where you came from, making sure nothing followed both of them. “Listen to me. You need to get out of here. Fast!”
The woman named Claire tries to talk about a way out, but the connection grows weaker and ends up fully turning back to static. Leon scoffs in frustration, yet turns back to you to make sure you didn't run off. It was now a race against time.
Leon grabs your hand, pulling you in front of him so you won't be left behind. The run through the halls felt longer and slower than expected.
Just as you enter the greenhouse, a lot of deformed undead try to grab at you, which you dodge barely. Leon keeps shooting his way through, not wanting to lose the only person he's been able to save.
The world flashes before your eyes, all you could see were the flames that engulfed the halls and bodies of scientists that you'd probably seen at least once in your life down here. You were scared, but showing it would lead to nothing but death and destruction again. Leon suddenly pulls you away as a burning piece of roof nearly crushes you, making you recoil at how your insufficient focus nearly led to your death.
You gasp, the smoke entering your lungs and burning worse than the disinfecting agents your parents used.. or used to use. Leon pulls you into his side, moving you so you could turn to find another way. Suddenly a huge hand wraps around Leon's neck, raising him up and leaving you alone and vulnerable as you scream at how abrupt it was.
“LEON!”
The blonde man wriggles in the monster’s grasp, which was looking disturbingly human in its attire. You panic, looking around for anything that could help. When you feel the new yet strangely familiar weight of your mother's gun in your hand you get the most risky and dangerous idea flying through your mind. After hesitating for a split moment you shoot a pipe next to the monster's head, which explodes instantly.
The floor under them heats up from the fire, making you fall to her knees at how much your bare feet were burning up. Adding to the dread is how your body was sliding backwards as the small platform breaks faster from the fire and Leon falling from the grasp of the huge creature. He quickly regains his senses and pulls you to his side again, trying to keep balance as more pipes start to explode from overheating, making the monster in the trenchcoat stumble.
You let out a scream as you fall from a seemingly far height while being in Leon's arms. He cushions the falls with his body, making him grunt yet keep composure. Both of you look up to see if you'd gotten rid of that thing, but to your shock the platform falls in your direction, making Leon pull you into another protective embrace, keeping your face in his chest and head on the arm he was bracing himself on. Fortunately it doesn't crush you and after taking a couple deep pants he helps you up.
You yourself couldn't catch your breath even as you tried to desperately lean on your own arm to sit up. The burning feeling on your feet wouldn't let her calm down and Leon immediately realizes that it wasn't just shock that kept you down.
He kneels beside you and spots the bleeding blisters on the bottom of your feet, which he tries to soothe with his finger tips. Of course you cry out in pain, supporting your body weight with your arms holding yourself up right. Leon apologizes with his hands up, which go back to your upper body to help you up.
“C-Can you walk?” His voice softens for you alongside his eyes tearing at the smoke all around them. Even if you clearly couldn't, you still accept the help Leon offers you. With one arm around his shoulders he heaves you up and you have to suppress another cry, which turns into whimpering instead. Leon notices, of course he does, and decides to carry you even if his body was slowly failing him as well.
You desperately cling to consciousness with adrenaline pumping through you. Your arms wrap around his neck, one hand holding the gun that was somehow still with you.
All you feel is Leon put you down after a span of time that was unknown to you. His hand cups the side of your face to make you look up at him through half lidded eyes. The smoke had blackened multiple spots on your face and he was already scared that he'd lose you. “Don't close your eyes, alright? Found an elevator and we're gonna be out of here soon. Promise.”
Just as you were about to think the horror was over as Leon starts the lift with a joint plug, another loud explosion accompanied with a roar rips through the air, even making you flinch. Leon is at your side in seconds, trying to shield you from incoming rubble. A huge tower collapses creating a bridge for a silhouette escaping the smoke.
It was that.. thing.
All you do is whimper as Leon presses your face into his neck. Another tower crashes near the two, nearly causing both of you to plummet into the endless void if Leon didn't push both of you out of the way in time.
If he didn't do something about this monstrosity, Leon would lose you too. Just like Ada, Marvin and all the others who were killed.
So he does the only thing that was even considered safe, moving you to the control of the lift, letting you lean against it. His hand held you upright by your shoulders, cupping your cheek to make sure you weren't passed out.
“Stay here, alright? I'll take this bastard down.”
Before you could even react Leon stood before you, back turned and gun trained on the enemy, who wasn't dressed in its trenchcoat anymore but bare waist up with only a red heart pounding in the middle of its chest.
The fight between the two was bloody, more on Leon's side since his firearms didn't seem to affect the Tyrant at all. The delirious state you found yourself in made your understanding of time even more chaotic. Your hand tries to find your mother's revolver, but only grabs the air instead. When you raise your head you notice it laying further off. The only choice for you was to slowly crawl that direction and grab it for protection.
You try to get to your feet, which takes longer than before. Your soles didn't have any blisters anymore, but her muscles were stiff. You pant like you've been through the longest marathon of your life, heart banging against your rib cage as you tried to catch your breath, hands resting on your knees as you tried to fully stand straight.
A loud clank shakes the platform even more and as you look up you see some sort of package sliding across it. On second glance it looked like a bigger gun. However it got down here.. It was there to help Leon survive this creature.
Speaking of Leon.. he was very unaware of the weapon not further off so there was no other way than for you to take matters into her own hands.
“L-Leon!” your voice was sore and over the destruction of NEST barely noticeable. “Leon.. LEON!”
Just as the monster was about to impale Leon he jumps out of the way and finally notices the rocket launcher further away. His footing weakens while trying to outrun the Tyrant and get the weapon. You quickly put a bullet near the vitals of it, which was a surprising shot seeing how shaky your grasp around the gun was.
“Go!”
He doesn't let you repeat yourself and jumps onto the rocket launcher, raising it into the direction of the enemy, who was already targeting you after that shot. Without hesitating he pulls the trigger and blood explodes everywhere from the giant's body.
You collapse onto her knees, tears rolling down her cheeks out of relief. Even Leon looks shaken up and takes about ten seconds to snap out of it and run back to you, helping you stand straight.
YOU ARRIVED AT THE BOTTOM LEVEL.
Just as the elevator hits the last part of its trip, you can't help clinging to Leon in an awkward embrace, trembling from adrenaline. He quickly remembers her injuries and picks you up, his own muscles sore yet pumped with the hormone rush.
Many zombies fall through an exit, which Leon circles around. Just as he runs through the door a train arrives on the tracks. You look up, face smeared with dust and tears. You were relieved to say the least.
But the train doesn't stop..
A huge pillar lands just in front of them, making Leon jump back and curse under his breath. With you still in his arms he quickly runs after it, helping you get on. Your eyes widen as you notice Leon falling behind.
“LEON!”
As the train moves faster and faster, Leon's energy starts to fail him. He looks desperate to survive, but the way his footing almost makes him trip shows otherwise.
“Leon, grab my hand!” you extend your hand and the man, instead of giving up, grabs it even if hesitating and with all your might you pull him onto the wagon. Both pant like crazy and lean against the wall of one of the railroad cars connecting the other. The NEST behind you explodes in the distance.
“W-Why did you hesitate..?”
Leon doesn't immediately respond and rather looks over, eyes not meeting yours, while trying to catch his breath. Your eyes were glossed with unshed tears, also heaving. Your blonde hair was all messy from the wind, blood splattered over your originally white gown, feet dirty and probably bruised.
“I-I..” Leon starts, sharing the same expression as you. “I just.. I was glad to see you at.. at least.. safe.”
Your lips tremble at his confession, which pulls at your heartstrings in a hurtful way. The tears that were brimming at the edge of your eyes fell, smearing the muck that stained your face. Your whole life was spent in that cell, your social life almost nonexistent. If it wasn't for your mother, who tried to treat you like a mom should with her child in small ways, you wouldn't have thrown yourself into his arms. You cling to Leon, crying at how sweet this absolute stranger was to you even if you had just met not even an hour ago.
Surprisingly Leon didn't push you off and pulled you into the warmest hug you've ever received. Both of you didn't smell or feel very good appearance wise, but it's the thought that counts. Leon knew that you had been denied affection and social interactions your whole life, something he could relate to a level. Not as extreme, but it was there.
He clears his throat, pushing you gently away so he could look into your eyes. “So.. how are your feet?”
Yeah, how were they? You slowly raise the soles and to your surprise they weren't as red as earlier. Leon's eyes widen, fingers moving to graze where the blisters were just a few minutes ago.
“How.. How did–”
“The acid injuries are gone too.” Susie motions to your hands, which looked flawlessly smooth other than the dirt clinging to them. “I-I'm not sure how, but.. this is the first time this happened.”
Leon just looks at you dumbfounded, not sure how to deal with the information.
Silence.
“Let's keep this a secret.”
Your gaze snaps up at his words, frowning.
“What?”
Leon looks down at you with the most serious expression he could muster. In comparison you were all doe eyed and looked destroyed beyond belief. This whole day changed everything and you clearly couldn't grasp the dangers outside of your usual comfort zone. If anyone found out about your abilities they'd take you apart one by one.
You try to reason with him, but he just gets up without letting you get out even a single word. His eyes move down to his wrist, where a glowing blue light emitted. That wristband that helped him find his way out of here. He quickly discards it off the train, a sad smile grazing his lips.
“Can't believe I actually miss her.”
Ada.
Your shoulders slump at the mention of her. If you would've been stronger, you would've been able to save her. All of this was your fault and somehow you had that weird feeling in your chest other than sorrow, as if you felt anger towards Ada.
Nevermind. This wasn't the time for such thoughts.
You follow Leon into the wagon and are met with two survivors inside. You immediately recognized one as that Claire girl from earlier, who's grinning from ear to ear the moment she spots Leon. “Leon?!”
Leon just greets her quietly, clearly grieving over everything that had happened. You finally notice the little girl right beside Claire, who was just letting the other two talk without joining in.
“Who's this?” Leon asks the moment he also notices the little one.
Claire pulls her into a side hug, smiling down at her. “Oh, this? This is Sherry.”
Sherry.
Find Sherry.
Static rushes through your brain, making you frown and hold onto your head in pain. Your mother's words echo in the back of your mind. Another weird memory flies past your eyes. It was you as a child laying in your mother's arms, which shouldn't be as unfamiliar as it seemed. This time your mother was a little bigger, a little kid's hand, assuming to be yours, on her stomach.
Then you were back in the present, not having noticed Leon holding you upright by her shoulders. Everything around you was muffled by some sort of barrier and you even had to blink more times than once to get your eyes focused again. When you looked up at Leon you could see him calling for you, which you could faintly hear.
Slowly your senses come back.
“Is she alright?”
“Who is she, Claire?”
The brunette also puts her hand on your shoulder, rubbing over the tense muscles in a soothing way. Leon helps you sit on one of the benches inside the train, kneeling in front of you. Only his voice was clear as day.
“Y/N..Hey.. What's wrong?”
But you don't answer and just let your eyes dart around, falling on Sherry who was clinging to Claire's side. Something suddenly shakes the train on an earthquake level, forcing both Leon and Claire to pull their respective companions into a secure embrace. You tremble in his arms, even more than little Sherry.
“What was that?!” Claire looks around, hoping to see the cause of whatever that was.
Leon completely ignores the question and pulls back to cup your face in his hands, who was clearly shaken. Your own arms come up to hold onto his wrists while you pant, trying to keep your heartbeat in check. He pulls your fingers up to your pulse point, making you feel the quieter beating of his own heart. This calms you down and you sit back even as he leaves your side.
Leon turns to Claire, who was soothing Sherry just as he had done with you. The woman gives Leon a firm nod followed by “I’ll check it out. You take care of Sherry while I'm gone.”
Just as promised she vanishes through the very doors you had just come in through. Another abrupt movement outside the train causes it to shake once again, making your heart skip a beat in fear.
“Hey, we’ll be fine. Claire's strong!”
The sudden voice snaps you out of the daze your fear had put you in, making you immediately look over to Sherry. Her reassuring smile was almost uncanny. No way this kid was this unfazed after probably having to go through worse shit than you did.
Once again another earthquake shook the train followed by the wagon's door being ripped open. The railroads connecting car fully destroyed besides the floor. A huge eye was closing in on Claire, who was fighting to stay on her feet. You three gather at the door, calling out for the brunette as they watch her fight. You immediately recognize the monster's patterns as that of your father's mutated form, which makes you freeze in your tracks. If it wasn't for Leon holding you by your waist you would've flown out of the train. Unconsciously you keep your own grasp on the little Sherry, who was screaming for Claire.
Speaking of Claire, she was being thrown around by the force of the wind.
“We gotta lose that car!” Leon's already kneeling over the lock keeping both wagons connected, trying to do as he said. You immediately knelt beside him, trying to help where you could.
Claire was fighting for her life, the huge eye closing in on her. With all her might she stabs through it with her makeshift spear.
“You like that?” She mocks it, substance dripping all over her body. With that she stabs into the eye even harder. “Goodbye, fucker!”
The creature roars, the eye exploding into yellow liquid that marks everything near it. Claire gets thrown back by the sheer force of it. Leon and you reach for her and she takes your hands so you could pull her into the wagon you were in, which gets separated from the creature who's engulfed in fire as the other part of the train explodes.
With a heavy heart you watch the last parts of your father go, the blood on your body symbol of the hell you had witnessed this very night. Everything had gone to shit and you couldn't help blink back some tears. Leon, sweet as ever, notices the moment the four of them sit back and wait for the next stop to come. His hand comes up to rub over your back, a sympathetic smile plastered on his face.
He looked like he wanted to say something, but decided to let you bask in this quiet moment. You end up with your legs pressed against your chest, something that had always soothed you even as a child. You were so in thought that you poor thing didn't even notice Leon taking his shoes off. Only when he pulls his socks over your dirty feet is when you look up, confused.
“You need them more than me.” He puts his shoes back on, turning away for another quiet moment. The trip feels long and you aren't sure how much time has passed, but when you arrive, the walk on foot is even more gruesome. The sun slaps on your skin like something straight out of a slasher movie. Ironically you didn't even know a sun existed, considering your life behind a locked door.
Leon's socks were protecting your feet just enough for you to feel the warmth on a comfortable level. You were slowly trailing behind the trio, smiling a little at how innocent Sherry was with how she spoke.
“So are you guys boyfriend and girlfriend?”
The three stop and Leon can't help but grin. “No.. we're just uh.. Well we actually just met.. last night?”
Claire smiles at both of them, that glint in her eyes growing. “Yeah.. that would've been one helluva first date though.”
Sherry turns to you, your cheeks redden the moment the little girl checks you from head to toe. “So she's your girlfriend?”
Leon also looks back at you, smiling at what Sherry was saying. “Uhm, no.. We actually met even later, but we're friends, right?”
You nod. The concept of friendship was something you hadn't even thought about. Your whole life the only people who could come close to that were your parents, but even then they didn't act like family or friends toward you. Your mother maybe, but not as much as when you were a kid.
The moment gets interrupted by Sherry pointing a finger into the distance, shouting “look!” as what looked like to be a truck heading your way. Both Leon and Claire's expressions turned serious and the latter whispered in his ear about the city.
Leon looks back at you and Sherry, frowning at something he was thinking about. “Get them out of here. Come on.”
Claire pulls at both of your hands, you resisting a little and shooting a worried glance to Leon, who smiled reassuringly. Instead of stopping, the driver continues and shoots out his hand to flip them off.
“Well he was friendly.” Leon shrugs and chuckles to himself, looking back at the sunset. You three join him once again.
“So is it over?” Claire also stares at the disappearing silhouette of the truck.
“I don't know. But if it's not.. we'll stop it. Whatever it takes.” There was finalization in Leon's voice, his eyes meeting you who was looking like him just before Raccoon City. His hand reaches for yours, grasping it and rubs soothing circles over your soft skin.
“Yeah.You're damn right we will!”
“As long as we stick together we'll be fine. Come on.” Leon pulls you into the direction they were originally headed to, Sherry running to take your other hand. Claire ends the chain with her being on the little girl's other end. And with that they walk into the sunset.
Happy ending? Far from it.
Not even an hour later they arrive at a very busy gas station. Leon immediately finds some place for Sherry and you to sit while Claire looks around for some transportation to get all of them back into any city or town.
Leon spots a cop car further off, people gathered around and murmuring about what's occurring in Raccoon City a few miles back. He looks back at Claire, who was tending to Sherry and you, reassuring you that everything would go fine. That police officer could be your ticket out of here.
“Claire.”
The young woman stands up, locking eyes with Leon who motioned over to the crowd.
“That could be our way.”
“The cop? Are you sure that's safe?”
“Do you have any other way to get us out of here?”
Claire's mouth snaps shut and she turns slowly to the cop car. “I'll talk to them.” As she's about to join the crowd, Leon stops her.
“Wait. Don't tell them you're involved too.”
“What, why?”
“You don't know how they handle that. It's best to just say you found us wandering and decided to take us here.”
“Leon..”
His hand finds her shoulder, squeezing it. “Claire, if this is about Sherry.. I'll take care of both girls. You still have to find your brother which is why you're even here, hm?”
Claire clearly isn't pleased with the plan, but doesn't decide against it. With Leon they start to make their way through the masses until they see a blue uniform, different from the RPD one but still the same concept.
You watch them disappear while Sherry clings to your arm. The little girl had taken a liking to you almost instantly and even handed you Claire's jacket after seeing how sparse your clothing was. A very sweet thing in such circumstances.
The feeling of the girl pressed against your side was painfully familiar,as if you were mimicking your mother in some way. People were walking by with sceptic looks in their eyes, and why wouldn't they? A little girl isn't that far fetched, but some girl in a white robe covered in blood and only socks to keep her feet from melting on the hot highway? Yeah, sounds strange.
Your two companions return shortly after leaving, but this time with another police officer. This one didn't wear the same uniform as Leon, but anyone could instantly realize what his line of work was. Leon and Claire talk about what had happened, the latter not revealing her involvement as the former had requested.
All three of you end up in the back of the cop car, Sherry looking out at Claire who was pressing her hand flat against the window. You were sitting in the middle, hands fiddling with Claire's jacket. The cop introduces himself as Mark and seems to love talking. Leon is the one answering in short replies, letting both Sherry and you rest after what had happened. You quickly fall asleep with your head resting on his shoulder, his arm circling around you, with the younger one following nestled into Claire's jacket.
When you wake back up the outside wasn't as empty as earlier. Houses flew by the windows and greenery blessing your inexperienced eyes. Still you kept your head down, the warmth of Leon making you sleepy again. The car stops shortly after and the door on Leon's side opens from the outside. You raise your head, your half lidded eyes locking onto a guy in a black suit waiting.
You turn to Sherry, shaking at her shoulder to wake her up. The little girl furrows her brows, but doesn't hesitate at sitting up right. Her little hands rub the sleepiness out of her eyes before smiling up at you.
The moment you try to get out of the car someone slams it shut right in your face. You lay your right hand on the window, looking out at a just as mortified looking Leon who was asking in a sharp tone what the hell was going on. The man in the suit was talking about you being dangerous and possible bio weapons. Both of you were confused and judging by Leon's expression he was too.
The moment you realize that you'd be separated, both of you freak out. Leon tries to get past the man, trying to get the door open while you knock harshly against the window. The man motions for the police officer to continue driving and when he starts the engine things get more desperate.
Your eyes widen, tears brimming at the edges. Your breath was coming in short gasps, calling out to a panicking Leon.
“L-Leon! LEON!”
The car suddenly drives forward and your screams turn louder as you watch the city and Leon disappear.
What brings you back is Sherry clutching at your arm, her scared doe eyes searching for yours. You both hold onto each other, the cop talking about something both didn't seem to hear from the whole ordeal.
You had a feeling wherever you were being transported to wouldn't be better than NEST. But at least you had Sherry.
Right?
