Milwaukee Day: One archive’s perspective
Milwaukee, like most cities, is complicated.
It’s deeply segregated, by race and socioeconomic class--which go hand-in-hand in the US.
Its parks are unbeatable and abundant, and, in the summer, the party never stops.
We’re known for our Germanic roots, and yet Milwaukee County has the highest number of Black residents in the state.
The brewing industry made us famous, and local distillers, breweries, and even the big names like Pabst are still the pride and joy of this town.
Outside the city limits, Milwaukee is often regarded as a place to party; to visit for the night but not stay; and the irresponsible roommate of the other municipalities--and yet its industry and attractions are the economic powerhouse of the state.
Milwaukee is a complicated place, and we have the collections to prove it. To celebrate the 414 on 4/14 (our area code for out-a-towners), I’ve asked our graduate student interns to find an item in the UWM Archives that reflects an aspect of the city as seen through their eyes. The results are entertaining and dark and earnest and passionate...so 100% Milwaukee.
It’s not perfect but its home. So come visit us, already, whydon’cha? We’ll save you a seat at the bar (or the reading room).
