So I got back into Neopets recently.

I have succeeded in earning and blowing about 85,000 NeoPoints in the span of the week (but fuck it, today’s my birthday.) As part of that I’ve transformed my Starry Grundo into a Cloud Gnorbu (or rather, transformed, then painted, because a Cloud Gnorbu was cheaper than a Halloween Gnorbu like I eventually want to get, but that’s beside the point), and I was just reflecting on how horrifying Morphing Potions must be, if you think about it, especially when talking about Grundos, in particular.

See, a morphing potion changes not only a pet’s color, but its species (unless you feed it to a pet with the same color/species, but that’s neither here nor there), so it is, in-universe, a very sudden and often quite vast change from one form to the other. In this case, my Grundo went from a squat biped into a very-slightly-less-squat quadruped. That’s one element. The other element that is possibly even more horrifying is the use of morphing potions on Grundos, specifically: the Grundo is an alien species that was canonically enslaved by a mad scientist and had to fight for their freedom, thus why there is no Grundo Day, there is Grundo Independence Day. And just because he’s a Gnorbu now doesn’t mean he wasn’t ever a Grundo, and so I wonder what, in-universe, the Grundo community must think of former Grundos (and new Grundos, for that matter, though I’ve never seen a Grundo morphing potion…). The former Grundos themselves must certainly get weird stares when they rhapsodize about their motherland of Kreludor or whatever.

I mean, just because he’s a llama with a cloud for fur doesn’t mean he doesn’t still self-identify with his former kinfolk of stubby limbs and Shrek-like ears.
