In the last month alone, I...
packed up my apartment in Rome
visited my favorite museum in Chicago in between landing and catching the train to Michigan
attended a conference literally the following day
uh, presented at that conference. probably could have practiced once or twice before doing that. um. hopefully others have forgotten about it as quickly as I have
returned to my apartment in the small post-industrial Rust Belt city I lived in for six years
got a covid booster (FINALLY), a new phone, my laptop looked at, and a bunch of medical stuff taken care of while I still had good health insurance
saw one of my dearest friends in all the world nearly every day, often all day, if not for hours at a time
coordinated hosting both my parents and my brother and his gf (not literally in my apartment, but still)
got hooded in my departmental ceremony (so cute. so glad I did it)
also saw a really great Nigerian band perform that evening
downsized and sold a bunch of things, generally for the same price I paid for them, and made back over $1000 (!!)
also gave away a lot of things, which felt lovely
packed up my entire apartment, which involved cataloguing all of my books on LibraryThing, keeping a meticulously detailed record of what went into each box (Moving Organizer Pro is a fucking gift, and well worth the .99 purchase price. I also color coded the in-house location of each box with tape), drove a uHaul van for the first time, and moved everything into a storage unit packed to the absolute brim
rescheduled train/plane combos three (??) times to give myself a bit of extra flexibility, but also the day of my departure Amtrak was running over two hours late so I had to change flights from the cab; miraculously caught the local train just as it was about to pull out of the station
missed my flight to NYC by mere minutes because I'd been snoozing and didn't hear them page me in the lounge
oh yeah, had a surprise interview in the middle of moving
eventually made it to NYC, where I hung out with friends, visited several museums, tried on every bra in Manhattan, visited a manuscript, saw a musical (Hadestown, obvi--hadn't seen it since it was still being workshopped off-Broadway! lowkey I think I preferred that version, but Orpheus was actually good for once), submitted final grades, contacted students/their academic advisors regarding unauthorized use of AI in their final papers, and met with two of them to resolve it before the end of my term of employment
went to my undergrad reunion in Philly, where I experienced many emotions, saw many old friends and acquaintances and beloved faculty, and somehow ended up with a minor leadership role (girl. why.) but also a very beautiful necklace. also I climbed a tree
returned to NYC, went to the Met for two out of the three exhibits I really wanted to see (Superfine and Sargent & Paris), and then picked up my bags from my friend's apartment in Manhattan, took the subway to Brooklyn to see other friends for about an hour before heading to the airport at around 9:30pm for my 12:30am flight, which was, inevitably, delayed
actually slept on the plane!! only for about four hours, but still. unbelievable how much that helped
landed in Rome, navigated back to my apartment with a truly silly amount of luggage, and crashed on the couch for about 9 hours
repacked my bags to get a few more things out of the way for the friend staying there from now until mid-July (this was deeply unnecessary, but perhaps I had one or two reasons for not thinking very clearly)
took the train north to Venice, rebooking twice because changing trains with large luggage at Bologna Centrale sucks
finally checked into the research center residence, realized I will not actually be able to grade AP exams this week (lol, duh. if they'd just told me the dates in a straightforward manner I could have told them that), toured the research center, unpacked, and finally got something to eat
I was on a reasonable sleeping schedule for the first two nights in Italy, but last night I slept at 2am and today woke up at 1pm, so...jet lag. fun. But I made it! It's over! I can rest!
