Mindless accident.
- Pairing: muffin!reader x cowboy!rafe
- Summary: You accidentally let the cows loose and Rafe gets upset with you.
It's mid-afternoon when you wake. Rafes already gone, as always he's up right when the sun is. You sit up and rub the blurriness from your eyes before you stand to go to the bathroom. You start your morning slowly. Brushing your teeth, washing your face, braiding your hair into pigtails and choosing a cute outfit for the day.
You padded down the stairs and out the door to find Rafe.
Skipping through the garden and stopping occasionally to put a berry or two in your pockets.
You found Rafe with the cows, taking care of a new calf that had been born a few weeks ago. You absentmindedly opened the gate and in your eagerness to get to Rafe to see the baby cow, you left the gate open.
"G'morning rae!"
Rafe looks past his shoulder at you and nods.
"Mornin'. You slept late."
"Sorry! I guess I was really sleepy"'
"Nothin' to apologize for. Jus' quiet."
"What's going on with the baby cow?" You said as you peered over his shoulder.
"The calf, ain’t getting enough nutrients from her momma so l gots to feed em. Like a fuckin' baby n' shit."
"That's so cute! Oh my gosh— can I try?"
"Yeah go ahead, my arms gettin' tired."
He got up from the wooden stool he was sitting on and got up to let you sit. You squealed and cuddled with the baby cow, helping it drink from the bottle. That's when Rafe noticed it. The silence. The stillness.
"Did you leave the fucking gate open?"
Rafe says sharply as he turns to look at you again.
"Huh?"
You turn to look as well and all the cows are gone. You can see them past the fence and further in the fields. Some of them got into the garden and halfway down a hill.
"Baby— what the fuck!"
You stand immediately and cover your mouth.
"I'm sorry! I didn't know!"
"How the hell did you not notice you left the gate open? This is why I don't want you comin' around the animals, cause you don't pay attention. Now I have to go around and get all the fuckin' cows cause you can't listen."
You didn't say anything. You couldn't. Already feeling the tightness in your throat and in your chest.
Rafe storms off, boots crushing the grass as he goes to get the Australian Shepherd, Bennett, to help get the cows back in the fence.
You sit back down to cuddle the calf and finish feeding it its bottle.
It isn't til later when you're back in the house that you cry. Kicking off your boots and smushing your face into a pillow.
You felt so bad for losing the cows, you would've helped but you didn't want to ruin the situation any more than you already had.
Rafe eventually gets the cows back into the fence. Sighing as he closes the gate and wipes his sweat with his bandana, Rafe noticed you were gone. He wiped a hand down his face and started up the hill back to the house.
Stepping onto the old wooden porch, leaving the front door swinging behind him as he takes the stairs by two. He nudges the door open with his foot and pauses when he sees you curled into a ball on the bed.
"Baby, what'cha doin' ?" He tugged on the sheets to see a little bit of your face. When you didn't respond he sat on the bed and flipped you over.
"Rafe!"
"You're not ignorin' me. I'm tryna talk to you."
"What?"
"Sit up, cmon."
You sighed heavily on purpose but sat up against the headboard anyway.
"There y'go. Y'wanna sit on my lap?"
“...No"
He took a deep breath then put his hands on his lap.
"I'm sorry I yelled at you. I know you ain't mean to let em' loose."
".. I didn't."
"You know I'm just very specific ‘bout my animals, they're expensive little shits. Just like you."
The last part made you laugh but you tried to stop it though it was already too late. "That's funny?" He teased.
"No. I'm not laughing."
"Yes you are, look at’cha." He pokes your cheek and you push his hand away so he goes for your belly instead.
"You're being annoying!"
"I'm tryin' to make it up. Cmon, lemme look at that pretty lil smile."
"Noooooo.”
"No?"
"Yes."
"Yes? You just said no."
"What? No— You know what I meant!"
Rafe snorts and tugs you into his side to kiss the top of your head.
"Are you gonna let me apologize now?"
You stared at him then rested on his shoulder.
"Fine... I'll listen."
"Now, m'sorry for yellin' and leavin' you alone."
You waited a minute again before responding.
"I don't like it when you yell."
"Yeah, I know. M'bad at it, ain't I?"
You nod shyly because you feel bad for calling him out.
"Yeah," Rafe says as he rubs your back. "But I'll stay workin' on it. Bitin' my tongue and all that."
"Okay,”
"Y'forgive me then?"
You nod and look back up at him. "It's okay."
"Don't say it's okay, jus' say you'll give me another chance to get it good." He keeps you tucked against his chest, rubbing your arms and the sides of your legs.
"I forgive you, Rae."
He smiles and kisses your temple. "Thanks sugar."
"Now y’wanna come help me take care of the animals today or you doin' your own thing?"
“…Are you sure you want me around?” You ask hesitantly.
“Course I want you around, you kiddin’ me?”
“Kay then… I’ll help.”
"That's m'girl.”
