Judging by where this guy was in the process, he would have been about around a year away, from where he could have went out and started his own band. At least that’s what a lot of people did, I think George Lynch did that(?), eventually teaching at Musonia after Randy left (Here’s how great George is; Tierra Del Fuego via YouTube).
Randy would ask what you wanted to learn, some wanted to learn how to read music, most didn’t. So he would start you with scales, then learn how using the scales and you could do hammer-ons.
You would switch off playing rhythm with him, where he would solo, you would solo (using the scales) back and forth and as always, he would pull something out amazing, you would stop and ask him what they was, and he would show you how you could use that, then resume, try throwing it in, and slowly over time you would improve and learn stuff on your own. He was so fluid with his playing as you can hear in the video. I think the guy even stops him in it and asks him “What was that?” hahaha! We all went through that with him.
I had hung onto one cassette, that I would use over and over for the lessons, but as CD’s moved onto the map, eventually you wake up and no one has a cassette player anymore, so I lost track of that darn tape decades ago.
