Have you ever thought about how perfectly the song 'Take Me to Church' fits the relationship between Dean and Castiel? I mean, Castiel is an angel, this higher, celestial, religious being who, at some point, will fall in love with a human and become completely loyal to him, like a ‘dog on a leash.’ As for Dean, especially considering his upbringing by John in both the show and the books—it's not so much about misunderstanding, but pure denial. Denial of feelings from both sides: on Dean's part, it would be 'I can't love a man,' but second side is 'he can't love me.' It’s almost like he couldn’t believe someone so important to him could actually love him back. And it wasn’t because of any physical attraction like with some of the other characters; it was real, genuine affection. He knew that Castiel could see through him, could understand his feelings, and he wasn’t afraid to show them. Castiel was the first person Dean didn’t have to hide behind his usual grin or the ‘I’m fine’ mask. For Dean, Castiel was more than just 'a guy I could fall in love with, and who could fall in love with me.' Dean saw himself as such a horrible person that he couldn’t believe someone who saw him for who he truly was could possibly feel love for him. On top of that, he had a deep skepticism about anything other than heterosexuality—especially when it came to himself. There was also a layer of hatred and FEAR involved. And not just the fear of accepting it, but the fear of losing the person he loved, his angel. I don’t know, but to me, this song really expresses a big part of their struggles.. 😔
