whouffaldi secret santa 2016!!!

hey there, @myc1ara! i’m your secret santa! i’m sorry i haven’t messaged you as much as i’d like to, but it was so wonderful learning about you this month and sharing christmas cheer and talking about fandom stuff. i hope you’re having a lovely christmas with your family - i know you must be freezing where you are, so hopefully some good fic (jk, my fic isn’t good, but you can read some quality stuff after mine) and a cup of hot chocolate will warm you right up. here’s my present to you, a brand new one-shot/short fic about the doctor remembering clara again. i’m also going to post one i wrote last year for secret santa that i may have deleted, a bit less angsty and more fluffy and christmas-y as a bit of an add on. this one doesn't *really* make sense but i was having trouble figuring out how exactly the Doctor would remember clara. but anyway, enough babbling, here it is! 

When the Doctor left the diner, he immediately went to (Clara’s) present day England to try to find her. He couldn’t quite remember where she lived, so he went to her work - Coal Hill Elementary. When he found memorial sites for her still set up all around the school, he hopped ahead a couple of days. There was still no sight of living Clara to be found, so he went a week, a month - nothing. He realized that she must have went straight to Face the Raven, not knowing she’d gone on her own adventures because he couldn’t remember her adventurous heart well enough to come to that conclusion. He knew he should feel sad, broken, but he couldn’t feel much of anything - just a nagging feeling somewhere deep in the back of his mind, a small memory of just how much he loved her begging to be recovered. He let it just sit there and he carried on, being the Doctor, like he’d told her to be. That’s all he could do.

The Doctor had no clue the memory wipe had functioned like somewhat like Donna’s - that the minute he put the pieces of the puzzle together and realized that the waitress was Clara, that nagging part of his brain would sort of unlock and take over and he would be irrevocably hers again. All he needed was a clue or a reminder. Even if he had known, he was sure this wasn’t a problem since Clara was presumably dead anyway. Bill would ask about her sometimes, repetitive and seemingly meaningless questions like those of a toddler, and the Doctor would act annoyed but truly his hearts warmed at her curiousity about the woman before her.

“Was she very pretty?” Bill asked once day, bouncing on her feet.

“Probably,” the Doctor replied. “You know that I can’t remember, Bill. But, I think that she was pretty, yet there was more about her than that. And I think that’s what I liked about her.”

Bill pondered this for a split second, then moved on to other questions about space and aliens and the Doctor let her endlessly chatter while he toyed around with the TARDIS controls, trying to figure out where to go next. He decided to just let the TARDIS herself pick, and they were thrust into a post-war planet.

The Doctor led Bill outside, and they searched around for people to help, things to do, adventures to go on. A shorter woman in a hooded cloak bumped into Bill, and she curtly apologized before scurrying off into a tent. Something about her intrigued the Doctor, and they followed her. The Doctor couldn’t believe his eyes when he walked into the tent.

It was bigger on the inside - and not just that - the inside was a diner.

Exactly like the diner he’d spoken to that waitress in.

He wondered if the woman in the hooded cloak was following the Doctor - someone from Gallifrey, maybe. His face heated up in anger as Bill and him hid behind the diner’s counter. The woman pulled down her hood and long brown hair was revealed. He could barely see her face, but she seemed young and old all at once, and she peeked through the kitchen’s doors, shouting to someone.

“Good job fixing the chameleon circuit on the outside, Clara,” she yelled over clanking noises and the sounds of machines.

The Doctor and Bill froze. It couldn’t be. There was no way. Bill looked at him, his jaw clenched and his eyes seemingly sparkling a bit, with hope or tears or a bit of both.

“But it doesn’t seemed like you’ve fixed the inside, have you?” The woman shouted to Clara, looking around. It was then the Doctor saw her face.

Ashildr.

He was immediately filled with a thousand feelings - happiness, because if that was Ashildr, she must be with not just any Clara, his Clara. There was no way that was a coincidence. Rage, for Ashildr not staying a thousand light years away from his Clara. It was her fault that this had happened. As a million thoughts rushed through his mind, another woman walked out.

And he remembered.

His entire mind seemed to go blank, like the hardware was being wiped. All he could see was whiteness. He must have passed out, because he subtly noticed Bill, and then maybe two other people, shaking him, but it was background noise as the white faded and his mind was flooded with memories. It was speeding through him like a tape on fast-forward, every memory, every feeling that he associated with Clara. He remembered every adventure, every Christmas, and just like that, his eyes opened.

His impossible girl’s chocolate brown eyes were looking straight into his. Both of their eyes were filled with tears as Clara tried to speak. She’d barely gotten a word out before he snapped up off the ground, encircling his arms around her petite body and crushing her against him. His voice broke a bit as he whispered,

“Clara, my Clara.”

And she knew.

thanks for all the support guys, you’re honestly the best <3 <3 <3 (honestly, you have no idea how much each word means to me, so thank you again. ily all) the date was ok - the girl was nice and i felt at ease with her and we talked about books for nearly an hour - but i wasn’t that in to her. :/ (i should mention it was a blind date)
