Yesterday was absolutely heartbreaking. I don't care which side you're on or what party you're affiliated with. I don't care about your theories or trying to debunk them. Yesterday a sacred Temple of democracy was desecrated. Blood was shed within in its walls. Those that are sent to represent us were cowering in fear for their lives. Vandalized, invaded, disrespected and defiled on a day when one of the sacred acts of the American union was to be held. Yesterday was a stain on American history that will not wash off. Ironically, watching this from abroad in Europe, it was joked that if these same images we were seeing were happening in another country, America would immediately step in to save those people from tyranny and violence. The joke is on us all. This is not the way. We were left with more questions and more problems and some of us received one particular message and it hit us very loud and clear. Some Americans will be shot for just walking while others get the door held open for them and are allowed to walk right in. We need to start taking a look at our collective definitions of terrorism and treason. We must also look inward and examine the gross hypocrisy displayed. So sickening and sad. Five years ago today, on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov 3, 2015 at about 4 PM, I had my hand on the door to my polling place when my phone went off. It was my builder, Mike, calling (we were in the midst of a major kitchen and bath reno). At first, I could not understand what he was excitedly telling me but eventually I heard “UVA” and “come home!” It was the call we had been waiting for - there was a donor match for Patrick and we needed to get in the car and head to Charlottesville. The next morning, November 4th, following a long night filled with tests and other preparations, Patrick was wheeled into the OR, where he received a new liver and a kidney. It was a day of rebirth. November 4th is also my brilliant niece Charlotte’s birthday. Today, I am hoping with all my might that November 4th will once again be a day of new beginnings and that our beleaguered country can start to heal.
