the eldest sister parallels between maddie buckley and eddie diaz

i will never shut up about eddie’s eldest sister-isms, and that one scene after maddie leaves where eddie explains to buck that maybe she needs saving this time, because buck’s only ever seen the side of her that takes care of him.

the buckley & diaz parents created two incredibly independent individuals to the point of isolation in order to protect those around them (e.g. maddie leaving to boston to protect jee, and eddie isolating himself when his emotions get difficult).

this makes it an incredibly significant moment whenever maddie and eddie DO lean on others for support or reach out for help (i.e. maddie promising to tell chim if she ever feels depressed or suicidal again, and eddie trusting buck with his breakdown in 5x13 and later getting buck to help him replaster the walls).

btw this hyper-independency is shown pre-911 too. eddie isolated himself within his relationship with shannon, believing it was his burden alone to take care of their family. maddie relied only on herself pre-911 and much through s2 for protection against doug.

both of their parents instilled in them from a young age that it was their responsibility to carry their burdens. margaret and philip buckley, and ramon diaz were all absent parents, and eddie and maddie being the eldest siblings were parentified and forced to take care of their siblings.

fortunately, this resulted in maddie and eddie vowing to do the complete opposite for the people who came after them (maddie with buck, and eddie with chris). they were both far stronger than they should've been; both in having to shoulder so many responsibilities, but also in being aware and mature enough to not pass on parental trauma and make it generational.

both maddie and eddie also kept contact with both of their parents for the sake of their children, even though they both had a plethora of reasons each to go no contact as soon as they moved out. very eldest sister of both of them imo.

to bring it slightly full-circle (if the talk about generational trauma wasn't cyclical enough for you), the scene where eddie has to remind buck that sometimes maddie needs saving too is beautiful. you can see that eddie painfully knows what he's talking about, and that it's from experience. even though the show's not willing to acknowledge it with a scene where maddie and eddie actually interact, this was still a beautiful moment that showed eddie and maddie's parallel childhoods and 9-1-1 continues to show how maddie and eddie are unwilling to make the same choices their parents did.
