"Have you ever had one?" she asks, and before Patroclus can stop himself he's thinking of the butcher's son back home, of the tilt to his smile and the blood under his nails. "A kiss?"

Patroclus nods. Tries to convince himself he doesn't actually remember the boy's name, or the smiles he'd give him when he thought nobody was watching, or the way his hands traced him like he was made of gold. Fails.

"Even more than that," he admits at last. The words taste like pennies on his tongue.

Wendie blinks at him, uncomprehending. Then she laughs. "The things people do to feel alive."

Another problem with this was - where were the *American* gods?   Native American deities actually got dissed, as "just culture heroes".  There was only the briefest mention of African mythology.
