Im Nayoung hates a lot of things. She hates cockroaches. She hates the color brown. She hates dishes piling up. She also hates scary movies.
Im Nayoung really hates scary movies.
She'd rather practice the Bb major scale for three hours straight or suffer writer's block for a week than watch a scary movie.
She didn't really have a choice, though, when Jieqiong begged her to watch.
(Stereo)Typically, the girl cowers behind the boy during horror movies. This held true for Jieqiong. This also held true for Nayoung. So where does it lead these two? Both hiding behind each other? Is that even going to work? Jieqiong being the cover? That kid will call Nayoung at 4 in the morning if she hears tapping on her window. Nayoung being the cover? It seems like the more realistic outcome, especially with her Stone Buddha nature, but she’s not sure if she's up to the challenge.
Nayoung has mentioned before about her distaste for the unnecessary gore and dumb main characters. She even bluntly confessed her overall fear that she feels during and after the movie. She hates the dark. She hates being alone. She hates the idea of dying for stupid reasons, like the unnatural or some psychotic killer.
Still, she's at the movie theatre. Their popcorn remains untouched. Jieqiong is grasping onto Nayoung’s arm. The Stone Face is somewhat gone; Nayoung is hugging her knees and hiding behind them. She closes her eyes, covers her face with her hands, and does not hesitate to scream an outburst when she is scared. Jieqiong, who doesn’t really like scary movies herself but just really wanted to watch one with Nayoung, is entertained by her girlfriend’s reactions. At first, she couldn’t tell if it was authentic or acting, but after 30 minutes of balled up Nayoung instead of protective Nayoung, Jieqiong knew the emotion was real.
Quite honestly, Nayoung zoomed past the point of embarrassment. For once, she was not self-conscious of how Jieqiong would react to this new side of her. She wanted to hate Jieqiong for laughing at her, but she also adored her laugh.
Oh shit! I was not prepared for that jump scare!
No! Don’t go on there! The— “Omomomomo!”
Why did I end up watching this damn movie?
Nayoung cowers behind her hands. Jieqiong is clutching onto her, but lets go immediately after the jumpscare is over. She can feel her throat tightening and her eyes tearing up. Actually, she just wants another jumpscare to happen so that it forces her tears to just fall out.
Instead, the plot dissipates. Nayoung can’t think straight to judge that the main character should just run away from the log cabin and call the police (and maybe a priest). All Nayoung wants to do is leave the movie theatre. The movie is no where near over, but Nayoung is actually contemplating offering Jieqiong to stay the night so she can have someone to cuddle with and feel protected.
Another jump scare. This time the dolls appears out of no where. The ghost tears are back. Her throat is tight. Nayoung just wants this to be over.

Jieqiong learns there’s a difference between Stone Nayoung and Dead-Inside Nayoung.
Stone Nayoung is as blank as a... stone. She may not show emotion, but you can see stress or anxiety or happiness in her facial structure.
Dead-Inside Nayoung looks like her soul has escaped to another realm and Nayoung’s eyes are lost without direction. Her arms are limp and her strides are short.
She was definitely walking with a Dead-Inside Nayoung.
Quite frankly, Nayoung doesn’t have the will to walk, but knows she has to drive the two of them home. Jieqiong has to drag Nayoung out of the movie theatre because Nayoung’s small, wobbly steps were not quick enough for the attendants kicking everyone out.
“Yah. Im Nayoung. It wasn’t even that bad.” Jieqiong teases.
However, it’s enough to irritate the sensitive Nayoung. She contemplates snapping back or leaving it be and chooses the latter. She didn’t have energy in her to fight back anyways.
Nayoung’s knees are weak and she starts to lose balance. She’s thankful Jieqiong is holding on to her or she might have collapsed to the group. Oh my god. What if I’m possessed?
“Hey. Are you okay to drive? You can’t seem to walk straight. I can drive back if you want me to.” Jieqiong tries to make eye contact with her. For a second, she wants to habitually be the alpha and drive her girlfriend home, but as soon as she realizes how hard walking feels like, she knows better to put their lives at stake because of her ego. Nayoung doesn’t bother to reassure Jieqiong that she’s any state of okay and lazily reaches into her bag to pulls out her car keys.
Jieqiong is shocked by the response. Nayoung treasures her car and would never let anyone drive it. Since she was struggling with money, she didn’t want to risk getting into a car accident or having someone get a ticket using her car.
Both of them knew that the safest way home was not with Nayoung in the driver's seat.
Jieqiong drove in silence, mainly because she was being a very defensive driver. She didn’t look at Nayoung much, but when they were at a red light, she finally checked on her.
The sight of scared Nayoung was quite… adorable. Who know this tall lady could curl up to a small child? Jieqiong wanted to comfort her, but she was also amused at the sight. She has never seen Nayoung like this before and she wasn’t sure if she’d see it again.
Nayoung was sitting in her seat just like she was sitting in the movie theatre: hugging her knees, crouching hear head below them, hoodie almost covering her eyes.
The car behind them honked, reminding Jieqiong that she’s actually driving and scaring the living shit out of Nayoung.
“Oh fu--!” Nayoung almost cusses in English.
Jieqiong has to stifle her laughter. Nayoung rarely speaks in English. In fact, she spoke more Chinese than English. You know shit’s serious when Nayoung almost cusses in English, let alone speaks the language.
Trying to be considerate, Jieqiong tries not to floor it, knowing Nayoung would probably stop speaking to her for days if she skidded her wheels or ruined her breaks.
After a few minutes of driving, Jieqiong decides to pull over, wanting to check on Nayoung.
“Why are we stopping? What's wrong? We need to get home as soon as possible!” Nayoung’s voice was probably five whole steps higher than usual. She sounded like a scared child who lost her mom in the mall.
“Hey,” Jieqiong spoke in a soothing voice, “are you okay?”
Nayoung looked up, but then immediately looked away. “I just... want to go home.” Jieqiong gives a pitiful look to her passenger. She had to fight the urge to just engulf her with a comforting hug.
Jieqiong bittersweetly smiles. She puts the car back on drive and signals to get back on the road. She reaches over and grabs Nayoung’s hand.
They weren’t the kind of couple to openly hold their hands in public and their physical affection was kept to a minimum even in their personal quarters, so Jieqiong was rather shocked when Nayoung tightly grasped her hand.
The drive was another 5 minutes and Jieqiong’s hand was cramping and she knew she should be driving with both hands, but she knew not to let go.
They eventually reached their apartment complex and Jieqiong parked Nayoung’s car in her designated spot. She was relieved to not be driving Nayoung’s car anymore, but she was concerned with what to do with Nayoung.
“We’re home,” Jieqiong gently announces.
Nayoung looks up and pulls her hood off. There’s a cute pout on her face, but there’s also a small wave of relief washing over her as she sighs.
Jieqiong stared at Nayoung, curious as to what she was going to do. Nayoung wasn’t moving. She didn’t look like she was going to say something.
Nayoung slowly regained her senses. She hastily removed her hand from Jieqiong. Jieqiong didn’t like the loss of warmth, but she could definitely feel her blood rushing back to her fingers.
“Sorry.” Nayoung started. Her mouth was still open, trying to come up with an explanation. “It must’ve been hard to drive with one hand.” Jieqiong took note of how Nayoung’s voice was still pretty high-pitch.
“It’s okay.” Jieqiong smiled. “Your car is in one piece.”
Nayoung looked down in embarrassment. She reflected upon how silly she must’ve acted after the movie. She told herself she’d be the strong one, where in fact, she ended up being the coward.
She didn’t notice Jieqiong leave the car, so she let out a small scream when the passenger door opened.
Jieqiong was startled, but tried to remain calm. “It’s just me.”
Nayoung looked away again. She stretched her legs out and exited her car.
The two didn’t talk much on the walk home.
Jieqiong didn’t really know how to handle the situation. Usually, Nayoung was the one taking care of her. This time, it’s the complete opposite.
They were walking a good foot away from each other. Jieqiong missed having Nayoung’s hand in hers. She hoped there’d be another opportunity for that to happen, maybe when Nayoung’s soul is back in her body.
At the moment, Nayoung did not have any thoughts. She was just… scared. She didn’t know why, but she couldn’t shake off the tense feeling in her body.
Jieqiong wants to get Nayoung’s attention. Maybe talking will take her mind off of things. She decides to poke her side. It was a harmless move, right?
Wrong.
Nayoung was very much taken by surprise. “What?” Nayoung yells. She clutches onto her jacket collar with both her hands.
Jieqiong is frozen, surprised of Nayoung’s reaction.
They intensely stare at each other. Jieqiong is torn between apologizing or asking if Nayoung is alright.
She didn’t get a chance to decide on either because Nayoung suddenly crouched into a puddle of tears.
Jieqiong momentarily panicked. She thought about the times she made her younger siblings cry and tried to think of ways to stop Nayoung from crying so she wouldn’t get in some sort of trouble.
She starts by rubbing her back. “Hey. Shh. You’re going to be okay. I’m here. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
They stayed like that for a few moments. She wanted Nayoung to let her feelings out.
Once she realized that they were in the middle of the apartment plaza, she pulled Nayoung up.
Letting go of her inhibitions, Nayoung clutched onto Jieqiong. They began walking to Nayoung’s apartment. Nayoung tilted her head, only to remember than Jieqiong was shorter than her.
Jieqiong noticed and with the hand that wasn’t being held by Nayoung, she pulled Nayoung’s head on top of hers. “Sorry I’m short.” She pats Nayoung’s cheek.
Nayoung finally smiled in what felt like forever. “Pabo. That’s not something you can control.”
It was a peaceful walk: arms touching, the two stepping in time, listening to the crickets. You wouldn't think that they were watching a movie about a psychotic mass murderer 20 minutes ago.
Nonetheless, Nayoung’s tears wouldn’t stop falling. Jieqiong noticed, since some of them fell on her forehead. She tried not to make a big deal out of it, but when a tear drop hung on her eyebrow, she couldn’t help but wipe it off.
Nayoung slows her walking pace. “I’m sorry. I don’t even know why I’m crying. I was just so scared.”
Jieqiong hummed. “What are you scared of?”
Nayoung giggled. She lifted her head because her neck started hurting. Jieqiong turned to her and wiped evident tears. Tears continued to fall, but she wiped them off with a sleeve. “I don’t know.” Nayoung distractedly responded.
The two laughed, finally relieving the tension.
Jieqiong grabbed Nayoung’s hand from her arm and put them in her jacket pocket. She was happy Nayoung didn’t bother to oblige because they were in public or for whatever Nayoung reason.
Actually, Nayoung continued to clutch onto Jieqiong’s arm.
They were nearing Nayoung’s apartment. Jieqiong was preparing to say goodnight when--
“Do you want to stay the night?”
For the nth time tonight, Jieqiong was surprised of Nayoung’s actions. She was wondering if she should watch more scary movies with Nayoung so she can receive more affection like this.
“Actually, can you stay the night?” Nayoung asked, but sounded as if she instantly regretted it. “I mean, if you don’t have anything to do for the rest of the night,” she pauses, “Or don’t have morning classes--”
“Sure.” Jieqiong simply replied. "I'd like that."
Jieqiong was sure glad she agreed because her response earned another heartwarming smile from the University Stone Buddha.
Nayoung pulled her in for a hug and Jieqiong couldn’t help but appreciate the close contact. Today, Nayoung was holding her tighter and she even let go last.
“I’m going to say this now because I’m most likely not going to feel the same way tomorrow,” Nayoung starts, “but I really appreciate you being here for me. I’m honestly embarrassed about it, and I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it. I’m glad to have you in my life. I’m glad to have you as my girlfriend. Thank you.”
Jieqiong felt her heart beating out of her chest and just hugged her girlfriend a little tighter.
