You and Finnick have been chosen to return to the Games. May the odds be ever in your favor.
On or off anon, tell my character something they do not want to hear and watch them react.
It is almost cruel, the way there’s not even a single cloud in the azure sky above them. The sun shines brightly and everything, absolutely every single detail she can notice, indicates that this day will be wonderful. It should be a day of joy, a day of laughter, a day of life.
Instead, it is a day of the Reaping. The day when they’re forced to celebrate the loss of lives.
❝Welcome everybody! It seems that we have been blessed with extraordinarily fantastic weather on this very, very special day. How delightful!❞
District Four’s escort, Dorothea Amberson, attempts to have a chit-chat with the citizens of fishing district, but is met with silence. It’s unusual because while their enthusiasm isn’t on the same level as One and Two’s, there’s usually some sort of excited whispering going on throughout the Reaping Ceremony.
Then again, this Reaping isn’t like the other ones. It’s the Reaping of the Seventy-Fifth Hunger Games, also known as the Third Quarter Quell. And soon, far too soon, two of the district’s brightest stars are standing on the platform, ready to be sent off to the place where the best scenario is that one of them comes back. The other one is already doomed with this being the last day they will ever see the lights of ocean district again.
The only audible noise comes from the mouth of Annie, who stands alongside Mags and the other female victors in a small area, surrounded by a rope. It’s like they are lambs ready to be slaughtered. Which is what they are. It’s only a matter of second before the unlucky is chosen.
A quiet sob after another come out of her lips and not even Mags’ attempts to calm her down seem to work. ❝Calm down, dear. It’s going to be alright.❞ But it won’t. Mags can’t say that, Mags shouldn’t say that. One of them is going back to the place where they once escaped and it’s going to be her. They’re going to make her go back and no, she can’t do that. She can’t go there again, she won’t survive, she can’t—-.
Dorothea gives them a odd look before announcing that instead of starting with women, they’ll choose a male tribute first. Her green eyes immediately turn their attention to the small crowd of male victors from District Four, instantly finding the one person she was looking for. Finnick isn’t staring at her. Instead, he’s facing the stage, not allowing any kind of emotion to cross his face. She barely hears the way Dorothea’s heels click against the stage as she walks over to a glass bowl and begins to dig in it. She’s only focused on one thing; repeating the same words over and over again in her mind. Don’t let it be him, don’t let it be him, don’t let it be him…
❝The male tribute from District Four is Finnick Odair.❞
❝No,❞ Annie gasps as he watches Finnick stand a little straighter and make his way to the stage. ❝Not him, please. Please.❞ She begs as Dorothea asks for volunteers.
None raises their hand or steps forward.
Not even glancing at their direction, Dorothea looks at the crowd and smiles widely.
Her voice doesn’t belong there. There’s too much joy. It’s like she doesn’t know how badly she’s hurting her at the moment, like she didn’t just take away the person she loves more than anyone in this world. ❝Mags, they can’t take him. I can’t lose him, I just—❞ Her frantic whispering to the older woman is interrupted by Dorothea’s voice. Mags takes her hand in hers, waiting.
❝The female tribute from District Four is Annie Cresta.❞
A second, or maybe even two, passes as her brain tries to understand. When she does, it’s time for a sob to pass her lips again and there is no way to keep herself together. She’s going back. Finnick is going back. There can only be one victor. There are twenty-two other victors. She won’t make it. She’s going to die. She can never have the future she dreamed of with Finnick.
However, before she can start her walk of death, she’s being pushed aside by an elderly woman with a cane. ❝I volunteer as tribute.❞ Mags says, voice garbled. She doesn’t wait for anyone to say anything before hobbling towards the platform. It doesn’t take long before she has joined Finnick, both of them now looking straight forward, not even sparing a glance at her.
❝No, you can’t go!❞ Annie cries out. Finnick and Mags are the people she loves the most in her life. They are her family - they are all she has left. ❝Finn and Mags, please come here. You can’t go. You can’t leave me alone here!❞ Her cries are met by silence. Finnick and Mags embrace as Dorothea announces District Four’s tributes for the 75th Hunger Games. Neither one of them comes to her.
❝Not them. Please, not them.❞ She pleads, voice now hysterical. ❝I can’t lose you. Please, you can’t go.❞
Once again, her pleas go unheard. A pair of peacekeepers take a step towards her, ready to block her path in case she tries to do something ridiculous. They force her to watch as Finnick and Mags are being ushered inside the Justice Building, one of them leaving the district behind for good. Her sobs haven’t ceased.
The sky is still the clearest shade of blue it has been in a while.
