Nasal Irrigation for keeping a healthy body.
Nasal irrigation (NI) is an Ayurveda therapy which the western world borrowed in the 19th century.
Its purpose is prevention of upper respiratory tract infections or to “alleviate” sinusitis, rhinitis, and postnasal drip among other conditions. My first experience with NI was around 2004. I was suffering a terrible case of sinusitis and I went to Lynn Sisters in Bowery Street, New York. I was expecting some Chinese herbal formula to drink but I was offered a Neti pot with a few small pouches similar to the size of ketchup take out. The ingredient was either Jin Yin Hua (Flos Lonicera aka Honeysuckle) or Pu Gong Yin (Herba Taraxaci aka Dandelion). I am inclined for the latter. I got home, and proceeded to do as instructed... OMG! A stingy and burning feeling took over for 1 or 2 seconds but for me, it felt like 5 mins. After several flushes a day for a week, my sinus problem was gone. I don't suffer of that horrible sinus problem since then.
How it works and How to make your own solution
NI works by dislodging mucous and eliminating or reducing prostaglandins and leukotrienes (proinflammatory molecules) and antigens that elicit allergic reactions while increasing lysosome and lactoferrin concentrations. The mineral content of saline solution used for NI assists in cleaning debris while supporting anti-inflammatory properties and maintaining a healthy lining in the upper respiratory tract where zinc functions are supported. The pH of the solution should be between 6.2 to 8.4 which has been shown to be safe for the integrity of the nasal and sinus lining and its functions. Some experts recommend Ringer’s Lactate (same as Hartmann’s solution). You can create your own by using distilled water and adding some mineral content that can mimic seawater minerals. Do not use Kosher salt or table salt.
Solution with a concentration of 5.4% or more can cause pain, blockage, and rhinorrhea.
Which bacteria or viruses attack the Upper Respiratory Tract
The question to ask is which bacteria or virus can invade the upper respiratory tract causing rhinitis, sinusitis and other upper respiratory tract infections? The answer is simple, in its majority, the culprit is a virus. Coronavirus is well known to cause common cold, sinusitis, and rhinitis. Like I mentioned on another post, H-CoV that can cause the previous ailments are HKU1, 229E, and OC43. Rhinoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, adenoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza viruses, and adenoviruses among others can enter and lodge and disrupt the upper respiratory apparatus eliciting signs and symptoms such as runny nose, and inflammation, just to point out two signs and symptoms.
A Few Last Words
Nasal irrigation should be part of your daily hygiene as it is brushing and flossing.
Your solution should be lukewarm, mimic the ocean’s water if possible.
Yes, you can add some baking soda.
Irrigation works best when in low concentrations, in other words more salt doesn't make it better.
Clean your neti pot.
Drink plenty of water, rest, eat healthy, and take your daily vitamin/mineral supplement.
