Cheat sheet for pronoun prefixes

Pronouns in nahuatl can be a bit difficult to keep track because they’re similar with each other, here’s a little breakdown for your (and my!) convenience 

Personal pronouns 

1st person singular: I or Me, is nehuatl (ne)  

2nd p. sing: You is tehuatl (te) 

3rd p. sing:  He, She, It, are yehuatl (ye)  

1st person plural: We or us, is tehuantin (tehuan)

2nd p pl: You (as in y’all) is amehuantin (amehuan) 

3rd p pl: They is yehuantin (yehuan) 

Example: Nehuatl temachtiani / I [am] a teacher. 

Possessive pronouns 

1st p sing: My is no-

2nd p sing: Your  is mo- 

3rd p sing: His or Hers, is i-

1st p pl: Our is to- 

2nd p pl: Your (y’all’s) is amo-

3rd p pl: Their is i- or in-

Ex: the word tonantzin comes from to-nantli-tzin, Our Mother + the reverential particle -tzin, and she is the goddess Coatlicue

Verbal pronouns (id est, verbal conjugation)

I’ll show you how it looks with the verb cuica, to sing

1st p sing: Ni-cuica, I sing

2nd p sing: Ti-cuica, you sing

3rd p sing: Cuica, He or she sings (you add nothing) 

1st p pl: Ti-cuica-h, we sing (you may add an aspiration at the end)

2nd p pl: An-cuica-h, You/Y’all sing 

3rd p pl: Cuica-h, They sing

Object prefix

When speaking this is combined with the verbal pronouns, I will elaborate in another post ヾ(￣▽￣) 

1st p sing: To me is nech- 

2nd p sing: To you is mitz- 

3rd p sing: To him or her, are c- or qui- 

1st p pl: To us is tech-

2nd p pl: To you (y’alll) is anmech-

3rd p pl: To them is quin-

Ex: You love me would be divided as Ti-nech-tlasohtla

         ->Verbal pronoun Ti + the object prefix Nech + verb to love

A little practice

Since I have the pronoun cheat sheet, I can start translating! I chose the first lines of Mitski’s I bet on losing dogs: 

“Baby, my baby, you’re my baby, say it to me. 

Baby, my baby, tell your baby that I’m your baby.” 

The vocabulary we need is very simple: 

Tlahtoa, verb to say, speak, tell

Yollotl, heart instead of baby, as a pet name

And the prefix Xi-, to indicate imperative 

So, 

Yollotl, noyollo, Heart, my heart

When you add your prefixes you remove the end sounds, which may be tl, tli, li, etc.

Tehuatl noyollo, You [are] my heart 

No such thing as a verb to be in nahuatl! 

Tehuatl can also be shortened to Te, as in Te noyollo 

Xi-ti-nech-tlahtoa, Say it to me, or Tell me 

Imperative prefix + Verbal pronoun + Object pronoun + verb

While its not necessary because we have enough context, you can add inin for the direct object: “say it to me”, Xi-inin-ti-nech-tlahtoa. 

A more precise translation of inin would be “this”, as in “say this to me”

I’m only dividig the words for clarity; in speech, be sure to say it without pauses: xitinechtlahtoa 

Yollotl, noyollo, Heart, my heart

Xi-ti-mo-yollo-tlahtoa nehuatl moyollo, Tell your heart [that] I am your heart

Imperative prefix + Verbal pronoun +Possesive pronoun + Heart + Verb

We are putting Your Heart, moyollo in the place of the object pronoun  

Nehuatl (i or me) can also be shortened to Ne, as in ne moyollo, I am your heart

Put together: 

Yollotl, noyollo, te noyollo, xitinechtlahtoa

Yollotl, noyollo, xitimoyollotlahtoa ne moyollo

A - atl 🌊 - pronounced as in Apple 

C - calli 🏠 - as in Key

     cihuatl 🚺 - as in Silly 

CH - chilli 🌶 - as in Chocolate 

E - elotl 🌽 - as in bEd 

H - huehue 👴 - mute, or W sound, as in  Welcome

     cihtli 👵 - after a vowel, harsh H sound, as in Hazy

I - ilamatl 👵 - as in squEEze 

L / LL - lalax 🍊 - as in Lemon, even when its doubled 

M - maitl ✋ 

N - nantli 👩‍👦 

O - ocelotl 🐅 - as in On 

P - papaki 😀 

T - tlacatl 👨

TZ / TS - tentsontli 🐐

TL -  tlacatl 👨 - can be pronounced as TL, T, or K  

X - xochitl 🌷 - as in SHoe 

Z - zacatl 🌿 - written as both Z, S, some Cs, or  Ç, as in Zero
