Early in the Second Age, Elrond is a loremaster-in-training (self-taught, but not any less well-taught for that, thank you) in Gil-galad’s court. He does not speak of his past, and does not take to inquiries with good grace. But when he receives an assignment that will take him to one of the few remnants of the drowned lands of his childhood, he finds that his past is not so easily ignored as all that. Gil-galad’s choice of traveling companion for him does not help matters. At all.

This fic has an interesting concept and is beautifully written. I like all the little world-building touches which make Vanyarin society feel complete, such as the description of the bells of Valmar and their different functions: “Off in the distance, bells rang low to signify the hour; others high for a wedding or a birth; others sweet and sporadic for no reason whatsoever.”

I really like this fic’s portrayal of Arien, strong and loyal to her duty. She accepts what seems like a painful and lonely future fate, not passively, but actively dedicating herself to her purpose. Her last words to Elenwë are very sad and striking. I like Elenwë here too, her curiosity about the world and her growing fascination with Arien.

Day 3: An AU fic (coffee shop, canon-divergence, etc.) Here are three Silmarillion canon-divergence AUs.

Title: Through Those Old Grounds of Memory Author: Cinaed Fandom/Pairing: Silmarillion, Finduilas/Nienor Summary: When Brandir suggests celebrating the anniversary of Níniel’s first year in Brethil, there are unexpected consequences. Rating: Teens Warnings: none Submitter Notes: A satisfying fix-it. Finduilas and Nienor’s relationship is very sweet, and I enjoyed Nienor and Turin’s sibling relationship as well. (Non-incestuous in this version, perhaps I should add.) *** Title: Love me and despair Author: Beleriandings Fandom/Pairing: Silmarillion, Galadriel/Lúthien Summary: What if Beren had died alongside Finrod in the dungeons of Tol-in-Gaurhoth? When Lúthien comes to Tol-in-Gaurhoth for her revenge, Galadriel is right behind her. Rating: Teens Warnings: Major Character Death, Dark AU Submitter Notes: What happens when Lúthien feels she has nothing left to lose? It’s utterly terrifying. And wonderful.

*** Title: thing of darkness Author: ncfan Fandom/Pairing: Silmarillion, Enelyë/Melian Summary: Someone else finds Melian in Nan Elmoth. Rating: Teens Warnings: Dubious consent, F/Fpreg Submitter Notes: Enelyë is a rarely written character, and I enjoyed seeing the journey from Cuiviénen from her point of view. A darker-than-usual Melian leads to a nicely creepy ending.

Can you recommend any Berserk fanfiction? They don't have to be particularly shippy or anything. The only thing I ask for is something longer than a one-shot and complete. OH! I guess if I have an absolute NOTP, it would be Guts/Schierke for obvious reasons. Thanks!

Berserk fanfiction?

I’m really sorry and I wish I could help because I’d love some more Berserk fic myself, but the writing side of this fandom seems to be very small and quiet, and if there’s anything out there then I haven’t found it yet. So any list I could make for you would be very short - and all one-shots or drabble collections, I’m afraid, because I haven’t comes across any multi-chapter stories worth recommending yet.

But here’s the best of what I’ve read so far, arranged in no particular order:

Anything written by hikachu. You’ll find a lot of fantastic Guts/Griffith one-shots and drabble collections here, both canon-compliant and AU. Also some Casca.

Things Broken (by ncfan). A very lengthy one-shot AU where Griffith didn’t find the crimson behelit in the lake. I don’t totally agree with the author’s characterisation of Griffith, but it’s still a very well-written story that takes a very heavy and realistic look at what his and the Hawks’ life might be like if the Eclipse never happened.

Forty Swings of the Sword (by zealousfreak27). Forty Berserk drabbles. Multiple characters and pairings. You’ll find a bit of everything here.

Anything written by Kamikaze Pedestrian. Fantastic character studies of Judeau and Corkus. Also some Guts and Griffith too.

Anything written by Silver Spider. Interconnected one-shots about Guts, Casca and Griffith, post-Elfhelm. Guts/Casca pairing.

Anything written by writinwaters. Some beautifully written one-shots, featuring Casca gen, Farnese/Serpico, and Griffith/Guts.

Anything written by alovelyburn. Okay, this rec is special. This author has written what I consider to be hands-down THE BEST Griffith/Guts fanfics I’ve ever read, and I seriously can’t praise these stories highly enough. They’re involving and amazingly written, the characterisation is perfect, the stories show a huge respect for the canonical dynamic between the two men and the tragic nature of the Berserk universe…and for one-shots, I swear you’ll get as much from them as you would from a multi-chapter story. So if you have any interest in this pairing at all, these fics are a must-read.

Anything written by Nox Artemis. Beautiful and sensitive writing, and a strong focus on Casca and the Guts/Casca pairing.

Bend and Break (by ywhiterain). A collection of AU drabbles focusing on the Guts/Casca/Griffith triangle, and with other characters and pairings added in too. TW for death and rape.

Choices (by Truth). A Griffith/Judeau story that’s all about the Griffith/Guts undertones. Great character and relationship study.

Thirty Days of Berserk (by LukeVonCastiel). A collection of thirty Griffith-centric drabbles.

And that’s it! Sorry I couldn’t provide any real multi-chapter stories like you requested, but I haven’t seen anything like that so far that I enjoyed. There’s nothing out there.

Anyway, I hope this list was helpful in some way. If you’re still looking for more fics, I can recommend visiting the Berserk fanfic LJ too. There’s some great stuff there.
