Is this episode in which Steve attends a CIB hearing on the list because it is essentially just a solid half hour of Tom Butcher's wonderful face?

Yes.

Steve has had a complaint made against him (again) which alleges that he's used unreasonable force against a suspect (also again) and it's up to his colleagues to make sure his arrogance and defensiveness don't make the situation worse for himself (....again again).

Some other stuff does sort of happen. George hangs about for a fair amount of screen time, and it's nice to see him do his Fed Rep stuff, but he is there largely as a dialogue prompt for more Steve exposition. There's a brief cutaway scene with a few of the relief in the canteen to remind us all that Nick Slater continues to be Nick Slater, alas. The two CIB officers are good - there's a tendency with a lot of the CIB/DPS/Internal affairs eps to show them as very snide and bullish, but Shannon and Davies are both firm yet fair, and it's a good writing choice, because the biggest threat to Steve's career is not CIB - it's Steve.

It's a great character study, especially coming in where it does season 12. Steve has gradually become more withdrawn and cynical over his tenure on the relief, and by season 12 the more playful laddishness of his early days has almost completely disappeared. Part of that is just growing up a bit, but it does become more noticeable in late season 11, post Response Time and Target. This Steve is colder, spikier, and you can see the fatigue over the politics of the job weighing heavily on him ahead of his exit the next year. The anger is always below the surface with him, but now it feels like it's only kept in check because Steve is tired with the job. He automatically assumes the worst, both with Davies and with Nick, and is dismissive of George's support, despite the fact pretty much everyone in the episode is clearly on Steve's side. And that's the crux of the problem; Steve feels alone and adrift, but he's pretty much put himself there.

Back to the Dave/Steve. Poor Rod’s rejected by everyone. First Debs and now Dave.

Nick’s last episode and it’s a great one, although I’m glad to be done with the recent spate of Nick-centric episodes. He takes Debs out to dinner and Steve, Dave and Rod scheme to try to ensure it’s a memorable night for all the wrong reasons. Debbie has different ideas.

They can’t seem to decide whether Rod’s friends with uniform or not, but I do enjoy the episodes where he is. I think his maturity level works better there than with most of the CID crowd.
