Crackpot Theory: 

I think Nick likes/reads Stephen King (Or, if you don’t wanna read this far, I do think there’s a fan producer/writer) - and also i think this could have been a nod to King. See the book “The Running Man” (written under an alias)

it even takes place in the same year!

But yeah the plot of the book is that we reach a capitalist hellscape where an entertainment company is effectively the government, and people go onto game shows where theyre maimed or killed, to try to win money for their family. Its a sad book, but really good, and i really loved the nod.
