Nick Vatterott Comedy Special Review: Disingenuous

There's a lot to be said about taping a traditional comedy special. It's how most comedians release the final draft of their jokes to the masses. Unfortunately, expecting an at-home audience to watch just one person talk for a full hour feels like a much bigger ask these days. We can blame smartphones, dwindling attention spans, or the seemingly infinite amount of other streaming options. But the modern comic's problem persists: How do I share all of this material in a way that will hold their attention? Nick Vatterott seems very aware of the challenge in front of him.

Disingenuous is his new comedy special, and it subverts the traditional format in a way that will keep you guessing. He plays with timelines and alternate realities to construct a unique narrative around a failed relationship, expertly planting callbacks along the way. It's experimental, to say the least, but it stays entertaining. More importantly, the parallel universe idea that Vatterott is trying out here still has plenty of jokes and punchlines.

While the concept may be a little heady, his style and performing talents are easy to articulate. He pairs situational premises with his improv background to deliver act-outs that heighten and crescendo in unexpected ways. The man is clearly not afraid to take risks, either. One bit has him changing identities on a dime, vacillating between his modern day persona and one of a comedian from ancient Mesopotamia. I said experimental, didn't I?

Vatterott began his career in Chicago, so it's nice to see that his special makes a point to celebrate the city and its vibrant comedy scene. He does not confine this hour of material to one stage, and locals might recognize the four independent venues represented in the mix. Multiple city landmarks are showcased, and several Chicago-based comics make cameos throughout.

If you are a fan of independent or alternative comedy, Disingenuous is definitely worth the watch.

The “Get Rich Nick” Podcast Both Investigates Actual Ideas to Get Money Quick and Is Delightful Along the Way

Nick Vatterott and Nick Turner, both mastered in their on-stage silliness as comedians, take a serious turn, albeit a slight one, for their new podcast Get Rich Nick.

Each episode has both Nicks legitimately try out different methods of making money real quick, taking whatever consequences and mishaps come along their way (so you don’t have to!). Throughout, Nick and Nick maintain a level of goofiness to have Get Rich Nick be funny while discovering something like donating plasma isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Other episodes cover betting on racehorses and doing TaskRabbit and have been very enjoyable journeys thus far.

They’re just a few episodes in, but Get Rich Nick is definitely worth an early subscribe. Please do so here or wherever you listen to your podcasts.
