One Smart Pup

Our cattle dog rescue, Lacey, loves games, clickers and puzzles…as you can see :) 

But that wasn’t always the case. When we adopted Lacey from Humane Society of Rome back in 2012, she was four years old with a rather sketchy history. Chasing cars soon surfaced as one of her problem behaviors - probably related to her Australian Cattle Dog bloodline for herding cattle. We tried a few things, but soon realized we needed some help to fix this potentially dangerous habit.

That’s when we called Andrea at Dogs Among Us for some help. Signed up for an initial Puppy Manners class and soon began to work with Lacey using a clicker. And, boy, did Lacey LOVE clickers…and still does.

She quickly learned new behaviors and lit up at the sight of the little clicker. At this time, Lacey’s about 10 years old, but she is still learning new things, and still learns pretty quickly.

Through Andrea, we found out about food puzzles, and since Lacey loved games so much, we decided to try one for her food. One of the most highly recommended came from Sweden (designed by Nina Ottosson) so we placed an order and tried it out.

Well, Lacey loved it so much, that we eventually bought a couple more to keep her occupied to make her work a bit for her food treats. In her case, it IS all fun and games at dinner and snack times.

So, Lacey gets a little break from her daily duties at Black Cat Dog Designs (QC’ing our handmade pet products) and tears into these puzzles to get at her kibble and small treats. And has a blast doing it.

I sometimes wonder if she thinks our dinnertimes are boring…eating our food off some very boring flat plates…no puzzles for us :-)
