Calliope Meadowes had already lost the battle of childbirth, but her child had survived. Meanwhile, Alecsaunder LeStrange, the oldest son of the LeStrange home, had managed to raise his daughter for two years before he was found. He had anticipated this. He hid the girlchild, went downstairs, and accepted his fate.
