whumptober 2023 day 4 : bathroom floor

Chicago med, Sarah & Noah

warnings : miscarriage, blood, might be medically incorrect

“Sarah? Are you okay? I heard something fall.” Noah’s knuckles tap against the wood door of the bathroom in his and Sarah’s shared apartment, and despite what people say, no they aren’t sleeping with each other.

“Um- I’m, I’m not really.” She replies with a shaky voice that makes Noah’s chest tight.

“What’s wrong? Are you sick? Should I get the thermometer?” Or maybe he should grab the complete med kit he keeps stored under his bed, it’s too packed full for a normal person to have, but Noah’s always liked to be prepared for things.

“Can you just grab me some new clothes? Sweatpants and um- some underwear.” He nods along before remembering that Sarah can’t see him so he calls out that hell be right back before turning towards the hall leading to Sarah’s room. Shes probably just on her period, nothing to worry about.

“I have your clothes, can I come in?” Noah squeezes his eyes shut after he says it, he should’ve just told her that he can leave the clothes waiting by the door for her. Asking to be in the bathroom with his roommate while she’s possibly bled through her clothes isn’t something a normal person does.

“Yeah, just um- there’s kind of a lot of blood.” The same tightness in his chest from before appears, only growing more when he creaks the bathroom door open and is met with Sarah sat against the wall beside the toilet. There’s blood stained through her light gray sweatpants and tear tracks are visible on her cheeks when Noah looks up to meet her eyes.

“Should I call an ambulance?” He asks too quietly and too hesitant for a trained ed doctor. There’s too many thoughts running through his head for him to think of anything else to say.

“No.” Sarah answers and Noah takes it as enough, she’s a doctor too, she wouldn’t say that if things were serious.

“Do you need help? Are- are you hurt?” The words stumble and Noah walks farther into the room, cautiously kneeling on the tile floor in front of Sarah, unsure what to do with himself in this situation.

“I um- I- I think I’m having a miscarriage, or, or that I had one? I don’t know, I woke up and-.” Her voice cuts off as she sucks in a sharp inhale, eyes not meeting Noah’s, he can still see the glossy tears building in them.

“Are you sure I shouldn’t call an ambulance?” It’s the only thing he can think to say, it’d be easier if he could. Call an ambulance, ride to the hospital with her, get Natalie and only Natalie to look her over because she has the most experience with this sort of thing -at least from what Noah knows- and hold Reese’s hand if she lets him. It’s the only plan his mind can come up with.

“No, no I’m okay. It doesn’t hurt as bad as it did, I’ll be fine.” Sarah says but when her hands press down against the floor her face screws up with a wince and Noah just barely catches her by the arms before she’s slumping back against the wall.

“Tell me what to do Sarah, tell me how to help.” It’s a question he shouldn’t be asking because he’s trained in this sort of thing, but Reese nods and breathes in a few deep breaths to settle herself.

“Help me get to the shower.” That’s something he can do.

It takes a long moment for Noah to get Sarah to her feet without him worrying that she’s about to collapse, but she leans her head against his shoulder and grips at his arms as they stand next to the tub, both of them hesitating to step into it. Sarah looks exhausted and Noah swears the blood stain on her pants has grown larger, he doesn’t want her to fall, or to hurt herself.

“Let me sit down and turn the water on.” There’s not a second between the words and Sarah moving to sit against the lip of the tub for Noah to protest. He would’ve, told her to breathe for another second, put her down a lot more cautiously than her own way of harshly falling onto the tubs side. He says nothing about it and flips the shower on.

“Now help me get my pants off and get into the tub.” Her head stays down as she tries to pull at her waistband, hands shaking and fingers not gripping enough of the fabric for it to work. Noah moves as carefully as he can to help, a sick feeling in his stomach when the pants get pulled off and he’s met with Sarah’s pale skin covered in blood.

“Is the water warm?” More so than Noah normally makes it but Sarah’s always taken hot showers, she leaves behind a steamy bathroom every time.

“It’s warm, do you want to get in now?”

“Can you pull my shirt off? I don’t want to sit in it wet.” It takes all of five seconds for Noah to drag the loose material over Sarah’s head, tossing it onto the floor beside the folded pair of sweatpants and underwear are sitting, they’re a little ways away from where the blood stained ones are sitting in a ball. The image of it has Noah’s skin crawling, something about the blood on the tile feels sickening in a way even an Or after a surgery doesn’t make Noah feel.

“Come here.” He steps into the shower first, not caring about his clothes getting wet, just wanting Sarah to get in without slipping.

“Noah.” It’s meant to sound annoyed, Noah knows that, but it holds none of the normal bite it should, and he wouldn’t have cared even if it did. He sits in the tub with Sarah, her back to his chest, the copper blood washing down the drain as Reese leans back into his chest with a small sigh and her legs outstretched under the stream of the shower.

“Don’t tell anyone about this.”

“I’d never, but you need to get checked out tomorrow.”

“I will. Just don’t tell Crockett.” Despite the questions that arise in Noah’s head hearing it, he nods and tightens his arms around Sarah.

“Promise me you’ll still come up here when I’m not around.” Sarah watches the waves crashing onto the rocks below, spraying foam high up into the air. The water stretches out for miles ahead until it seemingly vanishes into the yellowing sky.

“Sarah—”

“Noah, please,” Sarah cuts him off, and Noah hears the desperation in her voice.

“Of course I will,” he tells her softly, winding one of the tassels of her scarf around his finger. Despite it being the height of summer, Sarah was still well wrapped up, and Noah notices her shiver in spite of all her layers and the strength of the sun’s rays.

They’ve been out already too long. She’s wasting energy, he knows, with the bike rides and the walks along the shore. But it’s the only time anyone sees her smile. It’s the only time he smiles as well, these days.

He hates this. They both do.
