Search warrant served at Owasso High School in investigation of Nex Benedict's death

Police are investigating the death of a nonbinary student, Nex Benedict, who died after being involved in a fight inside an Owasso High School restroom. Police have obtained a search warrant to analyze the alleged crime scene and have collected evidence from those allegedly involved in the fight, including blood, DNA, hair, fingerprints, and clothing

Me and my right to exist

There’s something having to explain your sexuality at every turn, to put a disclaimer on your pronouns, that seems unfair. The fact that I have to think about whether or not it’s worth it to out myself to a group, to be in danger just because I want to referred to as who I am.

I think it’s unfair that my parents will never know the true me, the one who wants to kiss girls under the stars and dress so know one knows how to gender me, the me that they would never accept.  I think it’s unfair that I can’t have them at my wedding, to tell them my chose name, listening in as I tell the world who I truly am.  

I feel like I shouldn’t have to hesitate before putting my true pronouns in my bio, the hesitation caused by the thought of someone from school finding it and asking questions. That I am inherently a being that can be debated and dissected as a moral dilemma the way Cishet people will never.  I’m sure that it’s unfair that I am not something taught in every class and instead have to educate others myself, even when I just want to exist.  

Just existing was never an option for me and I think that’s what hurts the most. The fact that not everyone knows what non-binary means, or tries to gatekeep the meaning of the word.  It feels like an unfair trap, one I can never escape and that sucks.  

If someone asked what I would do if all this went away, what would I do, I would answer simply: not be afraid.  Not be afraid of being a binder, of being ridiculed, of being outcasted or hate crimed, just for who I was born.  

But the world is not so kind, so I stay in the closet, unable to explain why I don’t like specific words or terms, and try to live my life as happily as possible. Instead, I will try to talk about this unfairness, this hurt I feel to people who will never hear it, all while to scared to tell them.  

So I dream of the day I can just exist and hope it comes sometime in my lifetime.
