Grossest memory: Okay, so this is the only one I could think of that wasn’t caused by some form of illness. Basically, I was at a party and I hadn’t eaten anything all day. So I took a couple shots and drank a beer or two and was probably the drunkest I had ever been in my life. A couple hours go by and I wake up in a pitch black room, and I didn’t have my phone nor know where I was so when I got the urge to puke I didn’t move. I puked all over myself. I puked all over myself 12+ times.

What is "Craft"??
Beer consumers can often be misguided in their selections of beer, regarding the authenticity and integrity of what a craft beer "should" be. Before we divulge into the clashing tides of craft and non-craft... let's break-down "craft," by definition. According to The Brewers Association:
"An American craft brewer is defined as small and independent. Their annual production is 6 million barrels of beer or less and no more than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled by an alcoholic beverage industry member who is not themselves a craft brewer."
Not to mention, a craft brewer must be "traditional," meaning the fundamental ingredients in beer must be included within the final product, proper fermentation processes must be applied, and flavored malt beverages (FMBs) do not fit within that category.
And just for some mere enlightenment, let's take a look at 2 more traits that a craft brewery possesses:
“Craft brewers maintain integrity by what they brew and their general independence, free from a substantial interest by a non-craft brewer.” - Brewers Association
“Craft brewers have distinctive, individualistic approaches to connecting with their customers.” - Brewers Association
Sooo, we've got some characteristics of true ingenuity and innovation on our hands. Craft brewers deliver the goods of true American craftsmanship and the spirit of small business independence; both of which, have flourished in the past decade. As the consumers become educated and distribution spreads few and far between, the sales, craft surge, and overall impression make an impact.... An impact that ultimately takes away from the mass produced beer goliaths... Takes away from the non-craft guys that seem to innovate in their own ways, but we'll get to that. Let's take a look below at craft vs non-craft growth rates:
"In 2011, small and independent craft brewers saw their industry grow 13 percent by volume; in the first half of 2012, volume grew by an additional 12 percent. Meanwhile, the overall beer industry was down 1.3 percent by volume and domestic non-craft was down 5 million barrels in 2011.” - Brewers Association
And for those of you who are unaware of The Brewers Association, it is a non-profit organization supporting the industry and integrity of all home brewers and breweries alike. Not to mention, it consists of over 2,000 US Brewery members. So as a domestic non-craft brewery, who produces over 6 million barrels a year... how does one innovate against the jabbing "craft" guys? Easy.... capitalize on the craft game by buying into it. Swallowing up craft breweries like Pac-Man.... one by one.
I can absolutely see where these non-craft guys are coming from. Craft beer poses a threat... an increasing threat at that. And if it jeopardizes the market share and well-being of a company, the big boys will find ways of resurgence. You think InBev gives a rat's ass about what the Brewers Association thinks? Absolutely not. This is capitalism... This is business. You can preach you all you want, I don't give a shit how strong your vocal chords are. If there is room for opportunity to buy out the smaller guys and play the "craft" persona than so be it. It will always happen.
So what are we going to do about it? How are we going to stand strong against the big boys? They are not independent, they are not distinguished, and they lose any sense of character they ever had. They sell their souls to the wallets of the mass producer executives.
There doesn't need to be a sense of urgency; however, there needs to be a sense of awareness and business logic. If we haven't even broken a 6% market share, then some slight adjustments need to be implemented. First of all, "craft" guys need to quit bitching... I'm sorry, it's just a little pathetic. No one wants to see you swinging' your dicks around, pissing and moaning like pre-pubescent runts. Those are signs of weakness and insecurity. Secondly, since when have the "craft" guys started taking jabs at one another? Why in tarnation are the smaller guys throwing each other under the bus? I can understand the draft-line real estate is limited, as well as shelf space, but "craft" has to target against non-"craft." Otherwise, the majority of craft will implode. The craft industry represents small business independence but also represents a strongly knit community and "teamwork." How the fuck do you expect to reach 7, 8, or 9% market share while guys out there are deliberately bad mouthing other breweries and deliberately targeting specific breweries' placements? The "craft" guys are new plants in a rainforest. One day, they will provide people with life and fresh air. But until then, they need to keep growing, and capture the sunlight at the top.
Thanks to proper definition by The Brewers Association, we now have a firm understanding of what "craft" is. The true question that stands is.... who is misrepresented and why? When the "craft" guys are growing and get bought out, their sense of risk fades away.... and so does their craft integrity. This is how business works. I'm on the "craft" side, but don't expect Brewocracy to sugarcoat the shortcomings of "craft" either. Be realistic. If we want to start playing ball, than we have to start training, innovating more, and displaying a sense of community. Now I'm thirsty, don't bother me. Drink Responsibly. Over & Out.
