bit of a rant here...

Every once in a while, I’ll send out a post asking if anyone wants an art trade. Sometimes I get a reply from someone who wants me to draw their character. When this happens, I quickly explain that, as I said in my original post, I can’t draw, and that I meant to write something for them, and at least twice now I’ve been responded to with something along the lines of

“Well why did you call it an art trade lol xD”

...

Thing is...I really, really, really wish I could draw, but I’m not naturally gifted at it, and I haven’t had the time to sit down and learn.

I won’t pretend my writing is brilliant, but I wouldn’t offer it in a trade if I didn’t think it had some value. Comments like the above, just...ouch. Just reading the post and actually paying attention to it...or even my blog, would probably make it clear I don’t...no, can’t draw.

But...if you’re not going to read the whole post, at least don’t laugh at me for not being able to do what you consider “art” or blame me for failing to communicate somehow. We all have our skills and I’ve tried very hard to overcome my limitations and be a positive contributor. I’ve admitted many times I have no skill as an illustrator. Being called a non-artist just because I’m not gifted in the same way as others, well, really stings...even if it has some merit.

I know it’s nothing personal. I’m a writer, a photographer, a cinematographer. I can do many things. I’m not good at creating drawings. That’s no one’s fault.

Just...please understand that I’m doing the best I can. One day I hope I’m good at drawing. Today, I’m not. And if you can acknowledge that without making me feel bad for it...that would mean a lot to me.

If you made it to the end of this, my apologies for being Joe Depression. I’ll work my way back to doing better soon.

It was a fairly simple day,

With lots of time in which to play

I spied upon my travels far,

A fruit with flesh and shell too hard.

And placed aside this strange old plant,

A fish seller with a simple chant:

“To those within in this shopping mall,

“My fish are freshest of them all!”

I made a quick retreat, for I,

Am not one who sees such and remains.

And if you care to ask me why,

It’s out of fear I’ve gone insane.
