wishing i had access to a neuro research lab rt now bc i have a really fun research experiment i wanna do........ :((( well, it could be a longitudinal case study technically (if studied in humans) but i wanna use DREADDS (designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs--aka chemogenetics) to selectively inhibit neurons within area V5 of the visual cortex to look at the effects of akinetopsia (inability to perceive objects when they are in motion) on long-term memory. this would be done best in a primate model but there are so very few primate labs devoted to neuro research so realistically it’d have to be done in rodents which is fine but makes clinical applications of the findings more difficult to extrapolate upon. this is all coming from a journal article binge where i noticed just how often vision-based pathologies (akinetopsia being one that really stood out to me) seem to predate lewy-body dementia/alzheimer’s/other neurodegenerative disorders that disrupt memory. i wonder if there’s any correlation between poorer eye-health and/or vision & a person’s risk for dementia...

fun blood fact: red blood cells actually shed away important organelles such as the mitochondria when they reach maturity. why? because the electron transport chain, the site of oxidative phosphorylation (aka the ATP/energy-making machine of the cell), occurs in the mitochondria! & what do RBCs carry? nutrients & oxygen! so you wouldn’t want your RBC to use up the oxygen its coupled to before it reaches its destination within your body, no?
