could you write some headcanons on what mercury is like when he's romantically interested in someone, both before and after getting into an actual relationship with them? 👀 i love this cocky trash man so much 💕 thank you!!

Before a relationship:

Cocky. So cocky. This man is ready do do just about anything if it means impressing you even the tiniest bit. He lives off of the attention he manages to get from you, dreaming of earning a smile or a giggle--it inflates his ego like a damn balloon. It’s dangerous for someone to dare Mercury to do something, especially if he stands a fair chance of not actually getting hurt (hell, he’d probably do it even if he could get hurt, his lack of self-preservation is one of his downfalls at times).

He has a few nicknames for you, but nothing too crazy or different for those he develops for the rest of his team. If you pay a bit of attention though, you’ll notice that he usually uses nicknames for others when he’s making fun of them; for you, he uses them in general conversation. He uses them a lot.

Mercury isn’t normally a very personal sort of guy. Sure, he’s not a loner, he doesn’t avoid talking to people (he’s very much a charismatic sort), but he never delves very deep into the personal lives of himself or those around him; he doesn’t see a need to know someone beyond who they are now and what they can do for one another. For you, however, he opens up a little bit. Bit by bit, you get to learn his background, where he comes from--he tells you, in very general terms, how he lost his legs, how he sometimes feel broken, how he wants sometimes to go back and set fire to his old man’s house all over again because he still feels so hurt.

It’s a personal connection and, honestly, you’re the only one he shares it with. He’s one of the few people who wants to learn more about you (even if he’s not that great with talking about personal things). He asks questions, awkwardly remarks that you don’t have to tell him but...he’d like to help you, if you wanted.

After a relationship:

He’s still pretty cocky, even after the two of you get together, but he’s not looking to impress you nearly as much as before--you already agreed to date an idiot like him after all, and his self-preservation skills don’t suck that much.

Actually they do, quite a bit, except it shifted from a constant need to impress his cute teammate to defending them in both conversation and battle. Though not a jealous man, he’ll often be the first one to fight for you before you can do much of that yourself. It comes with the territory, with Mercury having it hard-coded in his mind to take care of himself from literally anything; it just so happens that you are, figuratively speaking, part of him in this regard.

His nicknames turn into petnames. They’re not always that different from what he used before, but they’re laden with honest affection. Said in ways he didn’t before; whispered into your hair, murmured into your skin, said with a warm chuckle. He calls you things like babe and sweetheart, even when others make fun of him about it--because you make him happy. He’ll actually quite open about that fact; you just make him happy and that’s enough for him.
