A talk about: Purble Place
I’m sure this isn’t esoteric at all to a lot of you, and in fact, you probably still have this game on your old windows 7 computer (if you managed to keep it alive for this long, in which case, congratulations!). But to those who can’t recall, this is Purble Place.
Back in the January of 2007, this game was released alongside the Windows Vista, created by Oberon games. They were known to be very influential when it came to casual gaming, it’s reach extending to multiple platforms, so naturally Microsoft sought them out to make a debut gift for the customers that purchased their new product.
Purble Place was more of a suite of three separate puzzle games than anything, and didn’t really carry a plot. It was a really good time killer, if you ask me.
The first game you could play was ‘Purble Pairs’ (as seen above) that was really nothing more than a matching game. Compared to the other two games, this was as boring as sin. No fun desserts, no homunculi to construct out of the pieces of these allusive Purble people; just flipping clovers while being stared down by an ugly ‘Purble professor’. 0/10.
The second was ‘Comfy Cakes’, where the object of the game was to match the layers, icing, and toppings of a cake with what was displayed on a tv. This was easily the best game out of the three, not only gracing the player with delicious cakes, but also a brief break from the unfaltering gaze that follows you whenever a character is on screen.
The third game was called ‘Purble Shop’. I personally did not fare well in this game, mostly because it took some sort of concentration and god knows by the time I guessed the correct shoes I was already off doing something else. However, since the game is essentially Mastermind, it held at least some sort of challenge (even if just a little) and had over 3000 possible combinations. If this isn’t enough to keep your mind busy, you could also ponder on the fact that the inhabitants of this mysterious Purble world are built from scratch from disturbingly well cut and cleaned body parts like eyes or mouths.
I also wonder why that Purble Professor from the first game is the only character that appears outside of the shop. Is he your first creation? Or your final warning?
Only a sequel could tell, but given that Oberon was sold to Iplay in 2013, we may be wondering this forever.
