Shanalotte, the Emerald Herald, is the Queen of Lothric and the mother of Ocelotte.
Lothric’s story about rejecting linking the First Flame is meaningful and important as-is. And I’ve seen a great fan theory that Ocelotte and Lothric could actually be the same person. I’m not presenting this theory as one that should become the new default fanon or anything...
...but what if Ocelotte was the one who had a powerful enough soul to link the fire, and Lothric and Lorian are posing as the runaway prince and his protector to distract pursuers from their long gone younger brother? While the lore doesn’t necessarily suggest it, I feel like the lore is hazy and indistinct enough to at least accommodate the idea if you want to put it in there.
Ocelotte was the youngest, and Oceiros was convinced he had great power. If Lothric was already powerful enough to link the flame, they certainly wouldn’t have needed to keep up the experiments to create a powerful vessel (which is why the theory that Ocelotte = Lothric makes so much sense).
I’ve seen it suggested that Lothric could be more of a title than a name, and that Lothric, Younger Prince may have a different first name. The same could be true of Ocelotte. ‘Ocelotte’ could be his first name, and he could have been more commonly known as Lothric. Maybe all of the lore for ‘Lothric’ is for Ocelotte, who also has a disability, an aptitude for magic, etc. It would actually make sense if Ocelotte and the middle brother had a lot in common, if Lorian was a first attempt, the middle brother was a better attempt, and Ocelotte was success.
Maybe when High Priestess Emma is begging you to bring Lothric back, she has Ocelotte in mind, but when you get to the boss room she’s not there to tell you you’ve got the wrong prince.
At the end of the game, choosing to link the fire doesn’t really seem to prevent the end of the world. Maybe that’s because Lorian and ‘Lothric’ told their little brother to run away and remember them well, they’ll take care of it. And then they did.
