"have him drive you to a guy with a better sense of humor.”  a beat  —  sam's surprised by how effortless her own quip is. this is a conversation out of place for the world she now finds herself living in; a moment with the sun shining on her shoulders, a greasy fast food bag in front of her, sam can recall a dozen moments shared like this with richie ... modesto is no longer the haven she could pretend it was. 

nothing is in fact: the illusion sam haphazardly cobbled together for years is shattered. she has another sister ... there is another link between herself and s.idney p.rescott, and again, it all ties back to b.illy l.oomis. sam doesn’t even know how to fucking unpack all that, but she's enjoying maureen’s company  —  whatever their future relationship will be. 

sam forces herself to bare the same little smirk, and pretend that she's occupied by dipping her fries in her milkshake.  

“you got a guy in your life?”  ... obviously, there will be no point returning the question.

Billy was drunk and it was obvious before the slurred words even left his lips. He had a problem with drinking much like his own father and he used the alcohol to escape his own head. He was collapsed on the sofa with some horror movie on the tv that he wasnt paying attention to as he drowned himself in the bottle. It was the anniversary of his mom leaving and it always fucked him up even all these years later he still wasnt over the trauma of it. He heard Maureen come in and didnt even lift his head. “Keep it the fuck down.” He slurred, even though she hadnt made much noise but he wasnt thinking clearly. “Grab me another beer will you?”

In truth, he found it weird that the family accepted this child in with open arms. All things considered, of course. Still, he couldn’t outright show his frustration in front of the others. So, when the two of them had been alone in the kitchen - Jackson is quick to display annoyance. “Is there a reason you’re staring at me?” Not much of a first impression - having kept his distance from these gatherings for this very reason. He was, after all, the only one in the family who stood by Billy through his destruction.

“... well, yeah.”  it was self defense  —  the police never questioned otherwise, even looking into sam’s colorful background. petty crimes and drug use is one fucking thing; sam's not a malicious person. it is the mantra that plays in sam’s head, constantly  —  she isn’t a killer, she’s not a bad person. even when ... their father appears with his taunts (he knows exactly how to dig under her skin. and of course he would  —  it’s her own fucked up head, who knows what sam fears more than herself?) she never wavers ...

then why is the memory so vivid? her hand remembers the frantic, furious motion of stabbing a blade deep into richie’s chest, again and again and again. sam’s fingers clench even now, as if there’s something for her to hold on to  —  she’s not a bad person. she’s not a killer, she is not b.illy l.oomis. who the fuck cares what dna they share ... 

then why, most of all, does the image of her father, nodding his approval, continue to haunt her at every turn? why did sam see the smile of the man she dreads most, before righteous anger took control? ... the police are right, maureen is right. common sense pokes its head around the corner, waiting to soothe sam’s woes. sam however, doesn’t grant herself the mercy of letting it in. self loathing and guilt take the reign  —  fucking huh. the story of her life. 

one day sam will win this battle. if not for herself, god willing, for tara; she can’t run away again.
